Bronco Mendenhall

Bronco Mendenhall is known for fielding dirty teams that “play to the whistle“. We know what that means. And it’s something that we can’t get away with but the refs will probably let them get away with. We have to keep our heads on straight and not play the retaliation game if that happens.

His teams at BYU were known to be notoriously dirty.

Bronco Mendenhall Must Rein in Dirty BYU Play

I’m not goldenized, but I’m not an idiot either. This 6-4 Virginia squad, with Bronco Mendenhall coaching them, is not to be taken lightly. This is their Super Bowl, as is many teams when they lineup against Miami

Was not aware that Mendenhall coached dirty, but knew the former BYU coach, LaVell Edwards, was the dirtiest coach of the dirtiest teams to have ever played college football.

Many years ago BYU came into the Orange Bowl to play the Canes (I believe it was 1988). After the 1st quarter of watching BYU’s late hits, going after the knees of our players on each down, spearing and every other imaginable dirty act by all 11 of their defenders I stood-up and went into a 5 minute screaming Andrew Dice Clay type of routine, only dirtier, describing how I felt about LaVell Edwards and the trained scumbags that were his players. When I felt my work was done, and to a surprisingly loud ovation, I turned around to sit down...and one row behind me sat Edward’s wife, who as they say, if looks could kill I would have been doing a Jimmy Hoffa impression.

Yet, I must admit that after all these many years later, and hoping I have matured, I regret that I didn’t…do an even longer routine when describing those dirty SOB’s!!

GO CANES!!!

There’s definitely a history with Mendenhall. To be honest I haven’t seen any Virginia games this year, so I don’t know if he’s continued it, but I’ll be looking out for it on Saturday

I watched a little of their game against Louisville last night and in the second quarter they had two freshmen playing the tackle spots. Couple that with an immobile QB and you have a recipe for disaster against our defense.

Their offense is bad. It's their defense that's making noise.

Win the turnover battle again and we win the game. Simple.

GOD, I cannot wait til ALL of Al Golden and Randy Shannon's stench leave our fan base. Fck a Bronco Mendenhall and Fck a UVA. Richt has these boys lit and we have real leaders on this team. They want something bigger and that's a birth to the CFP.

He's a good coach. I just really think Virginia is running out of gas as the season wraps up. They've got a bowl game wrapped up and they've faded down the stretch. They'll put up a fight...but I just think we'll be too much. Momentum for Miami right now is just too much.

Virginia is a middle of the pack team in sacks allowed and tackles for loss and Miami is going to unleash the hounds.

This is just a middle of the pack at everything team. They look like a 6-6 team that regroups during the bowl practice period and wins their bowl game in mid-December. Which is a win for Bronco at this point after the London era.

However, this is a Miami cover as far as I can see, especially if we get fans out of the game in droves and get that building lit up once again.

This is not about the stench leaving the fan base as much as it's realizing that while we're good, we're not yet at the level to be taking anyone for granted. If anything, this is still a young team playing ahead of everyone's expectations and have shown to be streaky. Yet, you're talking like they're the 2001 Canes, even they had their moments with BC.

While we have "real leaders", they're still inexperienced, they've never been through a trap game where they went from the highs of thrashing VT and ND to playing the likes of UVA and Pitt. In fact, the program have had a real trap game in 15 years. They show that they have the mental toughness to not have a UNC effort and finish the deal - get to the ACCCG undefeated, then we can say they've turned the corner.

The thought of this just put some excitement in my pants

While the above is true, UVA destroyed a historically very good Boise State program earlier this season. The final was 42-23 on the blue turf at BSU (where BSU was once a giant killer that won about 50 straight home games at one point). The UVA QB threw some bombs in that game & they have some good athletes at the skill positions. I'm not saying it's likely UVA will win but the Canes better not take them lightly or we will have a nasty surprise.

Yep. Unless we melt down worse than against UNC, we'll win by 3 TDs. They're not that talented, except for a decent DL and a scattering of others on the defense. Their QB never runs the ball, and their ground game is averaging only 3.5 yards per carry. Moreover, UVA just lost their chance at the ACCCG last week when they lost to Louisville. I think they're going to be emotionally drained.

By the way, prior to the Syracuse game when most everybody was predicting a blowout win I started a thread with the warning that was a trap game.

The response was a full out assault aimed at me with many of the usual suspects questioning my sanity, my sexual preferences, family breeding, asking that I be banned and pointing out my total worthlessness as a human being.

Now, I know that some offer dire predictions no matter the game or circumstance…I don’t do that!

Yet, if you’ve ever been in a huddle following a number of big wins and were taking on a clearly inferior opponent there are times, not always, that the entire team is flat despite saying all of the right things leading up to the game. And, those who know that feeling are aware that you feel like everything is going in slow motion, you are running in quicksand and no matter how hard you try to break out of that wet blanket feeling it inexplicably remains for the entire game.

I am not saying the Canes will come out flat and lose, but if they are not truly paying the price at practice this week then Saturday could be a North Carolina, Syracuse struggle…and hopefully not worse!
