I met multiple people this week that were from a cruise that departed from Jersey. Last night a flight came in from Miami but it was later and we were headed back to our apartment so did not see any Canes gear. Headed into Hamilton soon to hit a sushi place so maybe we'll throw up the U ha ha

It is like one large garden. Sailed from Mystic, Ct. to Bermuda on a 37 foot ketch back in the day. Took 5 1/2 days. Arrived at dusk to a fireworks display not far from the customs dock. Seemed like every square inch of the island was manicured. Beautiful.

i feel 37 foot isn't big enough for me to be in the deep Atlantic lol

We had 6 on board rotating at asst watch and helm. One morning I was updating the nav chart (we lost Loran leaving Long Island Sound and did the trip using a Sextant ... this was in '88 before GPS) and noticed that the depth was 18,000 feet. We dropped the sails and threw lines off the stern and 5 of us dove in. Crazy feeling swimming in the ocean 500 miles off shore in 18,000 feet of water.

Crazy that back in 1960 they initiated the Observers Single Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) with 5 boats (later grew to an event with over 400 boats participating) and the largest in that race was Sir Francis Chichester in 53' Gypsy Moth, and the smallest twofer the 25' Jester crewed by Blondie Hasler, an Irishman and Royal Marine, and the 21' Cap Horn sailed by Jean Lacombe. Chichester finished in 40 days and Hasler took 48 days while Lacombe took 76 days. The race was run every 4 years.

I lived in Ct at the time, worked in Manhattan, and kept my 24' (J24) on a mooring at the mouth of the Mystic River. Sailed from April 1 through Thanksgiving .... Block Island, Newport, Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket. The good ol days. I have a friend who was a writer at Motor Boat and Sailing magazine and her dad was at one time Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club. She told a story about a fellow journalist who wanted very much to interview Blondie Hasler after he had finished the second OSTAR race that ended up in Newport Harbor. He noted when Blondie finished the race, saw his boat at a dock, and decided to give him a day to rest and recuperate before "bothering him" with an interview. He went the next
day to the dock ... the boat was gone ... and when he asked around he was told "Blondie decided that 24 hours on land was enough for him ... he left to return to the UK". Unique individuals!!!
