I know everyone is focused on the storm and the Ark St cancellation, but hopefully this thread will be an outlet for those wishing to discuss football.

Had an opportunity to rewatch the BC game last night. I am not sure I watched the same game as many on this board.

Offense

-Rosier has serious accuracy issues. I am in disbelief that this hasn't been talked about more. I've seen the 4th Q miss to JT mentioned, but that is it. This guy cannot hit the wide side of a barn. Even the passes he completed were rarely put in a good spot to maximize YAC. He is not even close on deep balls. And he had time all day long.

He can also be a little quick to dump it to the check down guy. He had Cager for an easy TD on the last red zone 3rd down of 1st drive, but dumped it off to Walton and settled for a FG. Saw this happen several times.

Nice wheels though, and seemed to make the right decisions on the zone-reads.

-I thought the OL looked very good in pass protection, but struggled in run game. Some holes opened at times, but not like they should have against BC. Walton reversed field, cutback and juked people, and all that made it look better live and on the stat sheet than it actually was. Look at Walton's 1st TD as an example - OL got no push at all, and Walton made a play and scored.

-Boy can Donaldson pull. Does a great job of blocking in space. Gauthier I am not sold on. I will be keeping an eye on him.

-Cager has nice hands. A few nice snatches, including a few over the middle (he was the only WR I saw make plays over the middle). Broadcast mentioned he is a high jump champion. Looks like he could be a real weapon.

-I wasn't a fan of our route combos in the 1st half. Seemed like we often had too many guys in a small area. As usual, barely any slants, drags, etc.

-Mike Harley goes from stopped to top speed real fast. I'd like to see him get more dig routes.
-I'd like to see more Deejay Dallas too, maybe in 2 back sets if we are going to run primarily shotgun.

DEFENSE

-Talk about an over reaction to Delaney. The whole board has been in meltdown mode over the secondary, and especially Delaney. The defensive scheme and a lack of help from the safety over the top made it look like Delaney, when it was the scheme that sucked. There was one play where Quan was in the game and caused an incompletion when Delaney forced the WR inside - I thought he should have had more help like this all day. Blitz after blitz that didn't get there left him exposed. Was he stellar? No. But for what he was asked to do, he played a decent game. He did lose his footing at least 3 times I counted, wondering it it was an equipment issue. Speaking of scheme/blitzes...

-Didn't like all the DB blitzes against the offensive game BC was calling. Coming from the nickel was ok, but the safeties or edge guys never really got there. Too slow developing. How are they supposed to get to the QB when he is getting it out so fast? Not sure what Diaz was thinking. Michael Jackson got there once and destroyed the QB when he kept it on a zone read.

-Why we're our safeties playing so deep? Again, it was quick hitting passes. Didn't see BC throw down field once.

-Knowles will take Redwines spot. Maybe as soon as Tallahassee. Redwine has zero instincts. He is never around the ball. Playing down hill does not seem natural to him. Knowles was creating havoc blitzing (even if he didn't get the sack), and always seemed to be around the ball. He looked like Jon Lynch when he popped the dude at the goal line.

-Darion Owens is slow, slow to react, and not a UM quality LB. Whiffed on a blitz in 2nd Q that shouldve been an easy play, which led to the 4th down conversion. Gave up the 3rd and 7 near the goal line in the 3rd Q by not knowing his assignment. LB depth doesn't look great at this point.

-Our linebackers, esp mccloud, really bite on play action/rpo and get sucked inside too much. This was mentioned elsewhere so won't get into it more here.

-The slot was uncovered lots of times, as mentioned in the other thread. On the Bandy pick that got called back, you can see the difference his speed makes when dropping back into coverage to cover the slot. Bandy is by far our most dynamic and best guy at nickel. I don't know which of the 3 LBs you sit, but we can't run that base 4-3 when teams go 3 wide. Our LBs just arent suited for it.

-Our DEs stunt sometimes and I can't figure out wtf they are trying to do. I marked :58 in 3rd Q as an example, but I saw this same thing a few times. There is no blitz coming behind it, but they take this strange angle anyways. Zero awareness of where the ball is.

All and all, this game was never close and was treated as a scrimmage. Lots of overreacting on this board. Wish we had another tune-up before going to Talahassee, though.

OP says the board overreacted

Follows by posting 80% negative observations...

Ha, fair enough.

I had many of the same praises and criticisms as found in the other threads, so I tried to keep it to (mostly) thoughts I hadn't seen discussed yet.

Delaney, specifically, I think there was too big of an overreaction.

Agreed Delaney was fine. Whole defensive backfield was playing Cushion that drive. Was Diaz fault. They were throwing quick outs and hitches by design just happened to throw to his side

The announcers made it worse by saying they were picking on Delaney. Which I don't believe was the case

All good man, just giving you a hard time.

Thanks for bringing football content to the board.

I re watched the game as well, and paid specific attention to the different Defensive rotations used throughout the game.

What I noticed most was Tackling, the lack of Tackling in Fall camp really showed in the game & had a lot to do with people's overreaction to the Defense. There were a tons of plays that normally wouldn't have been gains if our guys just stick somebody.

I liked what I saw from some of the 2nd & 3rd team guys, Carter, Jennings, Wilder, Rome Finley & Mike Smith. Especially Wilder, he was covering WR's at certain drives in the 4th quarter, he's got great speed & looks like he understands his assignments.

I disagree with you on Robert Knowles, he played a lot with the 1's in rotation, he was on the field with both Red & Quan on drives. To me, he took a lot of bad angles in pursuit, I can't judge his cover skills because they didn't really throw any Deep routes.

On Offense, we controlled the tempo of the game, the only think I didn't like was some of the stupid penalties, but otherwise I'm not judging Rosier until FSU.

Last year, Kaaya was 12-18 for 135yds & 4TD's vs FAMU, Rosier was 17-28 for 217yds & 3TD's with 4carries for 41yds rushing. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing.

Liked what I saw from Langham, Cager, Berrios, Harley, Mike Irvin, Herndon & Deejay.
Want to see JT get more chances with the ball, need to see him run some Quick outs, Digs & Hitches.

Overall, I think most of this is just paralysis by analysis, this game didn't mean much at all, it just so happens we were so anxious for the season people just wanted us to play like it's a Championship game for the home opener.

I'm one of the few that doesn't believe the season is over because BC got some yards on us, these games vs FCS opponents are just scrimmages. They're cool to watch because I love Canes Football & love to see our guys out there playing, but they mean nothing.

Was looking forward to seeing us play Ark St, but oh well... Can't wait until FSU now.

A lot of guys were taking bad angles. I thought Knowles played with more fire than anyone on the team not named mark Walton.

I didn't like what I saw from Finley. He didn't jump out as bad, but I liked knowles and Carter better from our reserves.

What did you think of Redwine? He wasn't shown enough in the broadcast to really key on him, but he seemed to be chasing and out of position every time he was on the screen.

There were 3 drops that weren't on the QB. If they were caught, he was 20-28 for 217 and perhaps 4 TDs.

So what's the point? Nothing really.

The biggest loss in this Arkansas State deal (save the actual storm damage) is that we will continue mind-******* Bethune-Cookman.

What drops? I recall Herndon diving on a slant, another slant (maybe Langham?), and Harley in red zone. If these are the 3, they weren't drops IMO, they were bad throws.

The point is inaccuracy has been the theme throughout his career, including this fall camp. No sense in pretending it wasn't or isn't there.

I'd also submit that the deep completion to Langham was a 50/50 ball, underthrown, and if the defender gets his head around it's probably picked. That was about 60 of his yards right there.

I think on JT he is a little scared in college. On the kickoff he just ran straight up the middle and tried to get to the 30 yard line. I want more of what he did in HS and the under armor game. When he is creative and takes risks with the ball he plays like Hester and can score a td from nothing. sure their will b some 5-10 yard losses from doing this but he will get the occasional touchdowns from it.

He got drilled on the KR, ran right into the guy. I think you're right, that he just had jitters and needs to get comfortable.

Im just glad he is back there. Seems like every year there's a few guys we as fans want to see on KR or PR, and those guys never seem to be back there.

Berrios first punt return was pretty nice. Looked like he had nothing and turned it into a nice gain.

Disagree, tough catches don't always mean a bad throw.

And what does "throughout his career" means for a guy who has played 2.5 games?

I hope they struggle like that all year long.

Like I said, I thought the statistics were deceiving.

I use the term "struggled" in a relative sense - this was Bethune we were playing. When I watched the replay, with the opportunity to rewind and key in, holes weren't opening up like 10/ypc would suggest. We didn't get a great push or dominate them like I'd expect us to.

In the game he ran in a straight line so he wouldn't get yelled at for negative yardage. Just trying not to make mistakes.

Look at the 3:05, 5:50, 10:10 mark when jeff thomas is returning punts/kicks. See how much more creative and daring he was in HS. If he does this for us he will be a dangerous return man!
