Just like the higher ratings were inflated when we ran a fast O under Fisch. It goes both ways. There's no way we're a top 15 D this year. Sure, there were SOME improvements, but darn sure nothing earth shattering. Like you say, the slow O helped the D stats, but it didn't make the D good, just better on paper. When it mattered, we caved.
Yeah ... Lost in the D stats is that we were purposely slow on offense.

That 15th ranked D is "smoke and mirrors" ...

NO!

Plays per game on offense under Golden:

2011: 64.5 (120th)
2012: 70.1 (82nd)
2013: 64 (123rd)
2014: 66.2 (120th)

The defensive numbers were inflated because they suck and couldn't get off the field. Golden prefers to get beat up and down the field little by little as oppossed to giving up a big play. That is why he plays so "safe" on D.

In 2012 we were a quick scoring threat, and that's a big reason our plays were down. Since Coley got here it's been slow ball. It's absolutely by design, to help the D. Problem is, it doesn't make the D better, just makes the D look better because it's not on the field quite so much.
