We have a pretty severe dumpster fire now, and most of these coaches and staff have been at winning programs. They weren’t hired to manage a dumpster fire. They were hired (obviously) to institute a winning formula, including securing a roster of players that can execute what has worked elsewhere time and time again.
They obviously suck at dealing with a severe dumpster fire, which is toxic by definition, and seem to be adding to it. I’m not sure this is a fireable offense. It’s up to Mario (who won’t be fired) and RAD (who won’t be fired) to ensure some cohesiveness among the staff, without adding to the problem “afire”. Not an enviable task.
The current players know it is a rebuilding year and that by and far they largely suck (seriously, most of the time.) They know this isn’t going to be a bowl year and that fans and followers (and staff!) have little faith in them. They don’t like to block, they don’t like tuff practices, they don’t like to hear remedial instruction, they don’t like to dirty their uniform and play extra hard. Some are Keystone Kop quality; look at Jacurri Brown diving (or trying to) on that loose ball; you can’t coach THAT!
Who can blame them for largely showing up, collecting their NIL and fan adoration (for some), and not playing their best. And frankly, I am not convinced their best would be good enough.
Never mind they don’t like the coaches, the attendance, the team’s misfortunes or nearterm prospects, or the scheme. Ya see that upside down U you best do something to make them STF”U”. If not, well thanks for the few things you did well; see ya. And of course, there are a few who give it all, take it super seriously, and are thankfully quality exceptions (but few and far between.)
Maybe the offensive is 1970’s and could stand a huge overall (and another coordinator.) But what won in 1970 doesn’t necessarily have to fail now. If the players can’t deal with it, in many ways including execution and affection, maybe we need to wait for different players before this dumpster fire is gonna burn out.
