Among other players, Grace may be the biggest benefactor of the front Coach Diaz and Coach Kul will put together.

Brown had 11 TFL and 4 sacks this year.

We have guys like Gerald Willis or perhaps even Chad Thomas who'll play that 4-tech spot at times. If Manny Diaz continues to play guys in the 4 tech just inside of OTs, we'll have a few ends whose sole jobs will be to blow up the B gap.

AQM will stand up at times and likely be used in all sorts of ways.

Diaz is known for moving DTs everywhere, so guys like Norton, Jenkins, Moten, etc., will be asked to step directly into the backfield.

The one who stands out to me the most is Brown. A former Safety in HS, he's a versatile and speedy LB who was used all over the field. Jermaine Grace will probably be a little smaller, but also probably faster. Despite his Junior season being his "breakout," he had only slightly over half the TFL that someone like Brown had.

We don't know if Manny Diaz's scheme, as combined with Coach Kul's DL tutelage, will produce consistent defenses that help us win meaningful games. But, we're going to be upfield A LOT more. MSU produced nearly 100 TFL this year. If you're a DL or LB for the Canes, you're almost surely going to LOOK better than you have in the past. And, that should be enough of a motivating factor to do work over the offseason and, for some, get paid next year or within a couple years.

We're going to take a lot more chances. Whatever that ultimately means for the team, the individual players are about to flash.

I'm really warming up to this. The Diaz/Kul combo runs a scheme that naturally pulls the type of kids South Florida produces. This defense will appeal to these kids.

So the Anti-Nof?

For comparison's sake:

We had 47 tackles for loss (-195 yards) this year.
Mississippi State had 98 tackles for loss (-403) this year.

We had 18 sacks.
Mississippi State had 30 sacks.

We had 42 pass break ups.
Mississippi State had 68 pass break ups.

We had 12 QB hurries.
Mississippi State had 48 QB hurries.

For me I am at the point I would rather a QB get smacked in the mouth while throwing a 60 yard bomb once a game, then watch the defense get bowed over down after down after down.

And with Coach Kool on board this number maybe even higher. I like it.

I can't believe we had only 12 QB hurries, that's unbelievable. How the **** did we win 8 games.

Depressing stats from our team, wow

All lies.

Manny Diaz sucks, his dad is an *****, fly the banner Lu.

and dont forget the added swag our players will have because they know they can be successfull

McDougle had 48 QB hurries by himself in his junior year - 2000, I think....

AQM and CT were poised to have big seasons, they started making plays towards the end of the season, now that they'll have actual coaching, the sky's the limit.

I am excited to watch this defense. I would have taken anything that was effective, but watching guys get after the QB and disrupt plays in the backfield is my ideal.

I think what is even more telling about the above...

These are stats from play (mostly) in the SEC. Canes states were from (mostly) lowly Coastal Division.

Let's hope he can improve the numbers by just 30-50%...that might just be enough to win the Coastal Division...maybe...

Really, for me, it's more than the numbers. When you quadruple numbers of QB hurries, you're just playing under a different philosophy. So the takeaway for me is that we're going to play a totally different brand of football. As for results, I think it'll mean we'll try to KO "lesser" teams more often. At the same time, as I said in another thread, it'll be interesting to see if Diaz tries to "fix" defensive problems by throwing blitzes and aggression at issues (he's done this in the past). Or, if he trusts our athletes more and doesn't have to gamble as much. I have no idea the answer to that.

Making more individual plays increases confidence, which usually leads to the team making more plays. Let the cycle begin!

12 QB hurries all season! That has to be an all time low. Embarrassing.
