September 21, 1973: On this day 51 years ago, the Miami Hurricanes upset #5 Texas 20-15 at the Orange Bowl to open the 1973 season. Pictured below: University of Miami running back Woody Thompson bulls his way into the end zone for one of his three touchdowns to lead the Canes. The Longhorns rallied behind the efforts of All American running back Roosevelt Leaks, who rushed for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns. Late in the game, Texas running back Joey Aboussie appeared to break loose on a big run, but inexplicably fumbled the ball with nobody near him, which was recovered by the Hurricanes to preserve the victory. Texas was selected by Sports Illustrated as the preseason #1 team in the nation. It marked the first time Miami had beaten a top ranked team in any poll.

JG says hold my beer.

Woody Thompson was a big back for that day. Just passed away in the last couple years I think.

A great HS player out of Erie, Pa (home of the Biletnikoff brothers, one of whom (the one NOT in the various HoFs) QB'ed UM in the mid-60s)).
