It’s because no scholarship player has that number. That’s not really his number. He’s #5. He wears that as a tearaway jersey when he’s on punt return so we don’t have a duplicate number on the field. A ton of teams do it.

You can't have Clark listed as #5 on defense, and show up with ray ray Joseph as #5 on defense. Punt return is just a formation, but it's still a defensive formation. It doesn't matter that Clark is on the sideline.
