The Hurricanes have landed a commitment from a key 2027 target at the running back position, Mississippi running back Ty Keys.



A 6-foot-2, 200-pound standout who brings impressive athleticism, Keys excels with elite twitch and burst.

He makes quick cuts and accelerates well, able to make defenders miss while also having the patience to see gaps.

The Poplarville product rushed for nearly 3,300 yards this past season, racking up 45 touchdowns in the process en route to a state championship and "Mr. Football" award for 4A Mississippi.

His production and traits shine against some of the top talents in the country --- MVP at The Opening Finals and Under Armour Combine.



When speaking to CanesInSight last month, Keys expressed excitement about playing in the Hurricanes scheme of using multiple backs.

“When you have a guy that is going to switch out with you and do the same thing you are going to do, that is good," Keys said. "You trust everybody, I like it.”

The Mississippi native becomes running backs coach Favian Upshaw's first commitment during his Miami tenure.

"We definitely got a good connection," Keys said regarding his relationship with coach Upshaw.

Keys committed to Miami over the likes of Ole Miss and FSU, becoming the Hurricanes ninth commitment in the 2027 class following some decommitments last month.

 

Ty plays my home town Picayune Maroon Tide tonight. I'll be pulling for Picayune to win, but will also be pulling for Ty to have a great game. He usually does against Picayune but they rarely beat them.

I over here keeping up with Keys and I keep seeing highlight after highlight thinking he aight or he slow, but I am thinking to myself am I wrong about this one and he's him? Cause I am all in on getting a 1A which is Spell imo, pause. I may be sleeping on this Keys dude. And Keys just keeps carrying his team it seems, but HS stats and CFB are two different things.

He just runs high & has long strides (BIG PAUSE). Once he strikes out, no one catching him (BIG PAUSE)

 

Keys just ripped off about a 70 yard TD run. Looked effortless. Also, he looks every bit of 6-2 and over 200 lbs.

Dudes highlights are literally insane. Long run after long run; then a couple up the gut and then more long runs. Over and over.

 

Idc how it looks to some. RB is a position that coaching barely matters. You either got it or you don't. Vision and timing create yards. And that is natural. I am starting to think this kid has it. In a way we haven't seen in a while...

Hope so too as it's not that easy to transform your running style. Who was the 5 star RB everyone drooled over out of Deland that signed with Canes? He was big, fast, and ran upright. The experts on CIS kept saying he was a can't miss, learn to run less upright......

You're right. And this kid, like the Deland kid, is tall and skinny. We'll see.

I seen one interview and he said it himself, he has Bell’s style. With a good oline he’ll be great here.

Your comparison may be valid but Lorenzo Lingard was a track guy who also played football. I believe Keys is all football. Changing the running style for Keys should not be a concern.

Adrian Peterson ran upright.

I don't mind an upright runner, I get that you want some lean, and generally yes, but as an RB, I was upright, but as long when contact comes you bend and pop and you don't take contact on upright, which Peterson did, you'll be fine.

You often see those types of runner with former track guys.
I got coached out of being always upright and ran with a bit more lean so I could use my speed to blast through tacklers.

Haven't watched The Keys highlights or game film, but Lingard came out of wing T. I would never ever recruit an RB out that, cause you don't expect your tailback to do anything in space. The safeties are in the box and you run past them and don't see the second level defenders.

It's either you're blasting up someones backside or you hit a homerun. Not too many plus yardage runners in those systems.
