One game in the books, let's check out where we stack up. If anyone wants anything additional, let me know. I thought about adding where we stood at the end of 2025 as a comparison but decided against it just due to the level of competition and a full season's worth of data, but if anyone is curious, let me know.

Time of possession: 26th (32:24 per game)
Seconds per play: 73rd (29.0 seconds between plays) *Blowout, so not much takeaway here, but we need to be faster this year. 29.7 seconds per play in 2025, we need to get to around 25, at slowest, this year.*

Takeaways:

Not a ton, I was out of town so haven't started any rewatches yet, I'll get on that today. But my main focus this year is going to be on explosives. Mario is getting smarter by the day, you can tell he has some analytics guys in his ear, he talked for a while the other day on explosives. We have to be much more explosive on offense this year, and I think we all expected to be. Through 1 game, um, yeah. 4 plays of 30+ yards on Friday night, we averaged less than 2 last year. For comparison, Notre Dame led the country last year in 30+ yard plays per game, with 3.33. In 2024, the Cam Ward offense averaged less than 3 per game. So, 4 in a game is off the charts greatness. Keep going.

I won't get into the minutia, but just echoing what everyone else is saying, Mensah is a freak of nature, Mali looks WAY better than last year, which is impossible to even comprehend. We know we need to run it better, but I'll go out on a limb and say if we average over 8 per play and score 45 a game, we'll be pretty good this year. Let Dawson cook.

On defense, it's been dissected ad nauseum since Friday, so I won't rehash much, but from a statistical standpoint, again I'm looking at explosives this year. Stanford had 3 plays of 20+ yards, which isn't great, but it's certainly not bad. We didn't allow them to get a 30+ yard gain. Only gave up 4.6 per play, and most importantly, 6 points.

Aside from explosives, my benchmarks are yards per play, I'm looking at 7.0 yards per play this season on offense, and 5.0 on defense. A +2.0 YPP margin is elite elite. Yes, the offensive goal is lofty, but I don't care. We are reprehensibly talented at the skill positions, and very well could wind up with 2 offensive players in NYC in December. 7.0 per play usually ranks you right around 5th in the country year-over-year. With this talent, and how bad the ACC is, there's no reason to not hit this number. On defense, 5.0 per play is right about a Top 17-20 unit year-over-year. I think that's reasonable, again with this schedule. Pair a Top 5 offense with a Top 20 defense, and you're going to have a team with a Top 4 national seed. IMO that should be the floor for this season, again with the talent and schedule.

Get ready to have some fun this year, boys and girls. We are gonna put on a show offensively every single week.

You're right, 2024 was insane as far as 3rd down efficiency. 55.41% was the number for the year, which led the country by a massive margin.

2025 Indiana wound up at 55.73% last year, remind me how they wound up?

I'm with you, though. I think this offense will be Top 5, for sure, so if we're there, no reason to be anything less than elite on 3rd down. It's also a key metric for Coach Dawson, even with the lack of explosion last year, we still ranked 23rd.

50% is the benchmark to hit...if you're at 50% or better, you're absolutely in the Top 10 nationally and usually in the Top 5.
 
I also might do some pace related stuff this year in relation to stats. Mensah, for example, I expect him to have a season comparable to Cam.

Cam in 2024 threw for 4009 yards in 12 FBS games.....334.1 per game (yes, I know he only played a half of the last game)

Mensah is obviously above that pace right now after throwing for 401, so we'll track it starting again after Wake.

Same with Mali, he's going to be on all-time Miami and potentially ACC type record watch.
 
I pray that Marcus Freemans ego puts Leonard Moore 1 on 1 with Toney. Talking heads will try to make every excuse possible to explain why he gets worked. They will never admit that Toney is just better.

I don't think hes that stupid though.

Idk if you notice but Mario really pointed out when he went for the fade throw to Barkate on 3rd down, mentioned it in a couple interviews. I think we are reallly good with how we handle 3rd downs, will be interesting once Mensah mindset is in sync with our guys.

I saw some ridiculous stat where Mensah was maybe the best in America on 3rd downs at before Miami. Boggles my mind that people (talking heads not canes fans) didn't acknowledge how good he would be here pre season.
