It may be early, but 2022 Williamstown (NJ) 4-star ATH Keon Sabb has already made a name for himself in the recruiting world. Sabb was recently ranked as the #4 overall player in the 2022 class by 247Sports, and he spoke about how the designation has impacted him thus far.

“I’m truly blessed to be rated that high, but you can’t let the rankings do all the talking for you, so I just play my game,” Sabb said. “A lot of people will recognize you and target you (on the field), but I just love competition, I love competing. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing, I’m going to play my hardest.”

Attention from college coaches across the country comes with the territory for a player of Sabb’s caliber, and the Miami Hurricanes made certain to throw their name into the mix late last month when outside linebackers coach Jonathan Patke offered the Williamstown star.

“He was just explaining how good of a place it is and that they like me on defense at safety,” Sabb said of Patke. “He thinks I’ll be a very good fit in their defense. Once the pandemic is over, I’ll make a trip down there for a visit to see the campus for myself, maybe see a game.”

What will Sabb be looking for at Miami when he visits?

“I don’t know too much about them just yet, I just want to make sure it feels like I’m at home, that it feels welcoming,” Sabb said of UM. “I want to make sure it’s a good fit for me and that I can have a good relationship with the coaches.”

Other programs Sabb says he is in consistent contact with include Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan, Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, and Florida State (all offered).

Penn State is a school Sabb has already had a chance to visit due to Happy Valley’s proximity to his hometown, and the 6-2 190 pound prospect talked about what has him interested in the Nittany Lions.

“They have a really good coaching staff,” Sabb said of PSU. “I know somebody that went there too, and they’ll always tell me how good of a place it is.”

Despite all the attention, a quick decision doesn’t appear to be in the cards for Sabb, who is more interested in learning more about his list of options and seeing different areas of the country.

“Recruiting has just been amazing so far, I’ve just been going through the process,” Sabb said. “I probably won’t cut down my list until sometime after my junior football season, then I was thinking sometime my senior year I’ll make a decision. I just want to enjoy the process and make my decision later on. I know some kids my age are committing now, but you didn’t get to see all the other schools, take any other visits. So I don’t know how people commit so early.”

During his sophomore season in 2019, Sabb starred on both sides of the ball for Glassboro, recording 29 catches for 376 yards and 6 TD’s on offense along with 31 tackles, 5 INT, and 1 FF on defense in just 7 total games; Sabb later transferred to Williamstown over the offseason.

“I just like to make big plays and be a leader on my team,” Sabb said. “I’ve played quarterback and point guard, so I have that leader background. My dad’s a coach, and he always wants me to know what I’m supposed to do as well as what everybody else is supposed to do. I just feel like I’m pretty electric on the field.”

With coronavirus shutting down different parts of society over the past few months, it’s been an unusual offseason for Sabb as he attempts to grow his game for his junior campaign in 2020 with the Braves.

“It’s good and bad, you get to reinvent yourself,” Sabb said. “I have a weight bench, so I’ve been doing a lot of lifting. My uncle played pro overseas, so he’ll come over and we’ll do ladder work, or we’ll go to a turf field and I’ll run hills. I’ve been staying pretty active.”

Having lived in NJ for over 20 years, I understand that we'll have to win big to get top recruits like this kid. Penn State is a couple of hours away and they recruit NJ hard.

Big Ten in state school Rutgers has a hard time keeping kids at home especially the top kids. When I think about the challenges for Rutgers, it reminds me of some of the challenges of Miami and why we lose top recruits. The bottom line is winning. Win and kids will flock to the program. We need to get to the ACC Championship game and show we belong. That will show these kids that we can compete at the highest levels of college football.

Minimally, we need a 10 win season, but honestly that wouldn't feel that great to me. We need to show that we've separated ourselves from the mediocrity. Losing 3-4 games would make us just mediocre. We could repeat 2017 going 11-1 in the regular season and losing the ACC Championship game and Bowl game. Big improvement, but who did you lose to and how did you lose? We can't be losing to Pitt, GT, and the Dukes of the world. We have to crush those schools and then beat UNC and VT convincingly.

Given the schedule, I'm looking for an 12-2 or 13-1 season. I'm not saying we win that many games. I'm saying this is what's needed to close on these top level recruits. Especially with UF likely to win the east in the SEC and many of our prospects are considering them as well.

You from North or South by chance. Miami is still a name in Jersey (at least South Jersey) and the kids will go where they're made a priority like I said with Austin-Cave. Rutgers has struggled in Jersey because for the longest, they only prioritized the big North Jersey catholic schools but they've added some recruiters. I would imagine Texas A&M is involved as well

1. Miami recruits well in NJ for some reason.
2. UF isn't winning the SEC East. I think UGA smokes them
3. PSU covered for a pedophile for decades. If a kid is seriously considering them, he's got mental issues. I figure in this case its a courtesy add since he is in the area (like S Fl kids taking bags will say Miami when they have no intention of attending UM).
4. A&M and UGA will be dropping bags- Guaranteed. Miami needs to get smart and show recruits how to make legit real money with the new NIL rules.

Good kid it seems and sounds very coachable too. Will be difficult to snag from NJ but we just got several roster spots filled by NJ and NY kids. Stranger things have happened.

Yea, A & M picked up a couple Jersey kids this year. It looks like they’re trying to become a staple up there.

I agree with you but disagree with the win total. We can drop a few games as long as the attitude is back. I always remember the FSU team from 2010 they lost a few games but you just knew they were back. Especially when Greg Reid knocked the **** out of marshon lattimore in the bowl game i was like oh chit FSU back...****

I'm from Iowa originally, but I lived in the Cranbury/Hightstown exit 8A NJ Turnpike for 20 years. So, I'm right on that border. I'm a big time Eagles fan, but my best friend in NJ is a Giants fan from that same area.

I hear ya, but winning trumps everything because the money will be there legal or illegal. On #2 and #3 I disagree. NJ kids still follow Penn State despite what people think nationally. Trask is the best QB in the SEC right now. They will have a good year. We need to win the Coastal and show out against Clemson proving we belong. We don't have to beat Clemson, but we have to compete.

So, with winning and likeness money, there will be no reason for kids to leave home. Kids can "put on" for the hometown knowing they have a legit chance to make the playoffs and some extra coin in their pocket. We know when fans return to Hard Rock (maybe next year), Miami can be as electric as any school in the country. We saw that in 2017 when we hosted ND. We were rated the #2 team in the country by the selection committee going into the last regular season game against Pitt. If we can be a top 5 or 10 team, we'll pack Hard Rock every week with some of the most raucous fans in the nation. That's what it's all about.

Cool. From Camden originally. Spent the last 2 years in Columbus (exit 7) while stationed at Lakehurst (which is enough central Jersey for me) before moving back south. My cousin co-runs the top 7v7 program in the area out of South Jersey so I can usually get the scoop on local kids

Yes, but our schedule is so soft compared to what they did. Losing against weaker opponents has to end. We turn the corner when we don't lose to Duke, GT, or Virginia. Dropping games against mediocre teams is just mediocre. Nothing to be excited about. We've seen that movie a dozen times (literally). We have to dominate the Coastal the way Clemson dominates the Atlantic. Obviously, we were 6-7 last year, but there's no reason not to have high expectations. Only UNC, FSU, and VT should be a challenge. We have to win the games we are supposed to win. The only game on the schedule that we may not be favored is UNC at home. All those other 11 games we should and must win. I'm tired of the let downs. Let's over achieve for once instead of under achieving relying only on talent.

I have a friend from my hometown in Iowa who lives in Camden and coaches youth sports. Really thru me off that a white kid from Iowa would wind up in Camden,NJ. I didn't know he had been living in Camden until after I moved to South Florida 10 years ago. He had connections with the Heat assistant coaches and hooked me up with tickets.
