2016 Projected Defense - with draft discussion

Honestly Lu, AQM, Corn, and Artie could all declare and it wouldn't matter. We're still in the coastal which is the weakest div in any P5 conference.

Miami should contend for the coastal every year regardless of talent with a competent coach.

You're right. But, I'd prefer to set the bar a little higher. With a best case scenario defense, and a good coach/system, we can reasonably do so.

On talent alone, Miami should win the coastal every year. A competent coach would have Miami in the ACC CG every year.

In your at worst post you might want to exclude gayot. He had a pretty serious injury from what I've heard.

I expect Tyler Byrd to play a lot next year (assuming he sticks)

That'd be surprising and really unfortunate. I was told he'll be alright.

Our CB & LB depth is awful.

What the **** was Golden doing? We may have to go JUCO route for a body or two.

I see a very slow Defense today. Unless these guys all of sudden shave a full second of their 40 times, they will not be a top 10 Defense...

You see guys look slow.

Here's what I see:

While the offense is preparing to get set, I see the coaches relay in an algebra word problem. The defensive players then solve that problem (some alone, some together). When they're done, they're allowed to go stop the ball.

At times, that process looks slow.

great post. im crying but i dont know if the reason is its really funny or sad

UM has already offered a juco corner.

i liked what i saw from Gayot before injury...he has speed at LB...Darrion Owens is extremely good. Need him back.

Honestly Mccloud and Quarterman are logging mins next year...and physically those guys are ready.

This is true but there's also been a legit lack of speed. Look at our DEs outside of aqm. Look at LBs like McCord and Harris - those have been slow positions. Thank god grace and aqm have played because outside of them, we've lack speed. Look at Crawford - horribly slow.

Fixed it.

I don't see very athletic DT. We have recruited for NT in a **** 3-4. Also how we end with recruiting will be huge for next years defense. We need LB and DBs to contribute early!

You are about 80% right with that IMO. While mostly its the scheme, what they are asked to do and the fact that they can't just run on instinct.

However, they are still slow and you can see it in pursuit and closing on the ball. Remembering the kind of speed we used to put out there in good ole days that was the biggest thing that stood out. Even when the defense broke down what would be a 50 yard gain was kept to 15 yards because we had too many guys that would close to the ball and fast even with bad angles. Now you see the opposite. You see guys running in quick sand trying to corral mediocre players on the opposition.

Safety is probably where you see this lack of speed the most Crawford, Jenkins and Carter are on the slow side.

Mccord and Harris are not natural LBs and should not be playing in space even 25% as much as they're asked to do. It's not a surprise that they look slow. Adding Crawford into the discussion isn't indicating anything other than our coaches value than wrong things.

Bush, Jenkins, Elder, Burns, Grace, Gayot (when he was healthy), Young, Owens, AQM, Thomas in spots, Harris as a DE, Mccord as a DE, Moten inside, Norton for being a huge guy...

...can all look fast or explosive in the right position.

Jenkins is plenty fast enough for a Safety. Crawford should be in the box. Look at my response to AUCane. Let's wait to see a lot of these guys in a different setting. Are they all going to look like Grace and Elder? No, obviously. Those two are exceptionally fast/quick, respectively, for their positions.

Corn likely wont go higher than the 3rd round because he is small. 5'9 or 5'10 about 170-175, won't get you drafted highly.
