Current Team Situation: Miami loses 2013 starting quarterback Stephen Morris to graduation. The Hurricanes return senior backup Ryan Williams, sophomore Gray Crow, and redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen in 2014. Miami will hold an open quarterback competition that will begin this spring. Williams has yet to start a game for Miami, but he has plenty of playing experience. Williams started ten games as a true freshman at Memphis in 2010 before he decided to transfer to Miami. Over the last two seasons, Williams has played in nine games and completing 37-of-52 passes for 456 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Olsen was considered one of the big catches of Miami’s 2013 class and this spring will be a key time for his development as he looks to push for a starting job.

How Miami Addressed The Position In 2014: The Hurricanes signed two quarterback prospects in the 2014 recruiting class and both of them have the potential to be starters for Miami down the road. California quarterback prospect Brad Kaaya (6-4, 210) is a big, sturdy pocket passer that led his team on a surprising state championship run. Kaaya is a four-star prospect and was considered one of the 2014 quarterbacks who improved most over the last year. Alabama prospect Malik Rosier (6-2, 200) offers some dual-threat ability while also having a very strong arm. Rosier ran ran for over 1,000 yards this season and can bring a different dimension to UM’s attack in the future. Rosier will also play baseball at Miami.

Miami’s Need For 2015: The Hurricanes will look to add one more quality player to the quarterback group to help breed competition for the future starting role. Williams is the heavy favorite to win the starting job in 2014, but after this season the race should be wide open.

The 2015 Targets

Torrance Gibson - There is not a more athletic quarterback prospect in the country. Gibson is considered a five star quarterback prospect because of his elite potential and he would be a five star wide receiver prospect if he wanted to concentrate on that position. Gibson is also being heavily pursued by schools like Ohio State, Florida, Clemson, and LSU, who will all sell an offense that will use his dual threat ability. Gibson doesn’t plan to make a college decision until National Signing Day. Miami needs to make it clear to Gibson that they want him as a quarterback and not as an athlete. Gibson helped lead his team to a state championship while throwing for 1,789 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,063 yards and ten touchdowns.

Nick Tiano - Miami was the first to offer the pocket passer from Chattanooga, Tennessee last week. Tiano (6-5, 220) has a similar recruiting profile to class of 2014 quarterback signees Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier. Offensive coordinator James Coley jumped on offering Tiano early and now the UM assistant has a track record of making sound early evaluations. Tiano is looking to take a visit to Miami in March. Tiano threw for 1,800 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. Tiano will go through the process this spring, but Miami is also in good shape.

Brandon Wimbush - New Jersey is a state Al Golden and his staff have made a priority and Wimbush is one of the top prizes from that area in 2015. Wimbush already took a trip to Miami in June for the summer camp and he plans to take another trip in the next month. At the moment, many believe Ohio State is the school to beat. South Carolina is another school to watch in Wimbush’s recruitment. Miami is in pretty good shape with Wimbush at this point.

Deondre Francois - Miami also offered Francois last week, who has dual threat ability. Francois grew up in the Miami area and admits he is a fan of the Hurricanes. With that being said, he also has offers from Clemson and Louisville and likes the way those offenses have used their quarterbacks. Francois threw for 1,373 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has been clocked at a 4.6 in the 40.

Other Names To Watch: Miami has also offered Georgia dual threat quarterback Lorenzo Nunez. Right now Ohio State is considered the team to beat for Nunez. Lakeland Christian quarterback Christian Alexander claims a Miami offer. He threw for 1,865 yards and 22 touchdowns during his junior year.

Final Thoughts: Miami has plenty of talent at the top of their quarterback board and the Hurricanes are in a early good position with all of those players. Miami is close to the top three on the list of Gibson, Wimbush, Tiano, and Francois. Now it is up to the UM coaching staff to close on the player they feel like will help them most in the future. Landing a top quarterback prospect in the 2015 class will only help the future of the Miami offense as the quarterback battles down the road will bring the best out of a talented group.

I have an issue with this. You can't afford to wait on a QB until signing day, especially if you're only bringing in one, which I assume we are. Of the 25 4 or 5 star QBs on Rivals, all but 3 committed to the school they signed with prior to the start of the 2013 season and 2 of those 3 also made earlier committments. The 3 that committed later; a kid that committed to Iowa in December (based on his offer list, don't think he should have been a 4*), Carta-Samuels who decommitted from Vandy after Franklin left, and Treon who decommitted from FSU.

I want the two local kids (Stanley and Gibson).

I want to get rid of Crow and have 2015 look like this...

2015 QB Scholarship Roster

Olsen (Rd-So)
Kaaya (Rd-Fr)
Rosier (Rd-Fr)
Gibson (Fr)
Stanley (Fr)

List is good but I would take Stanley and Brandon Wimbush. Wimbush is a stud and we could get that Fitz as well as a package deal.
