2014 Blanche Ely (Fla.) point guard Lance Tejada was a part of a tigers team that made it all the way to the national tournament last year including winning the state championship.
“Last season, we came into the season feeling that we weren’t being as respected as we felt we should be. We weren’t getting invited to all the big time events because we lost all five starters, but we proved a point. It made every thing fun.”
Despite the recent success he has had with the tigers, he is currently unsure about his future at the school.
“Right now, I’m not sure if I’m going back to Ely because our coach just got fired. The principal and him were going at it for a while. They’re trying to get his job back, but as of right now I’m not sure if I’m going back to Ely.”
The 6’1 170 pound guard is one of the top players in the nation and described his game type as a multi talented guard.
“I think I’m a true point guard, I can take over the game whether it take being more of a facilitator or a scorer. I can get into the lane and I’m a good passer; I can just change the tempo of the game. I’m just trying to improve my shot and keep it consistent.”
Tejada compares himself to a point guard that hurricane fans are very familiar with.
“Shane Larkin, thats what I get a lot of. We play hard and are very physical guards. He brings that defensive effort to the table and he is an all around leader.”
Tejada is one of top players in the nation and has multiple schools after him which includes Miami, Florida State, Alabama, Uconn, Texas A&M and USF.
“Yeah those have been the main schools in contact, Texas A&M has been my latest offer.”
The hometown hurricanes are a main school of interest for Tejada and he takes a liking to Head Coach Jim Larrañaga style.
“I like the way Coach L coaches; they’re comfortable under him. He doesn’t make his players feel like they have a rope on them and he lets them go after it. I like the way they send there point guard off a lot of screen and rolls with Shane (Larkin). I think I could fit in that system.”
Tejada took notice of the hurricanes run last season in the NCAA tournament and does admit their success does help.
“Yeah, especially that. You always want to be with a winning program. Anywhere you wanna go, you wanna have a chance at that title.”
The star point guard has also noticed how well Larkin has improved under Coach
Larrañaga and his potential in the NBA.
“That does, but I feel he worked hard for all of that success as well. I played against him my freshman year in the state finals. I feel like he earned all of that, but I just want to go to a school that fits my style of play and where I can get better.”
As far a decision, Tejada has no plans on reclassifying but does note he will not rush into any decision.
“No I’m not gonna reclassify. As of now, I’m not sure when I’m gonna make my decision. I want to take my visits and see all my options.”
