Seen a Twitter thread and this got me thinking. Can the 2023 class be better than the 2008 class on paper? I know the 2008 class flopped once they arrived here… Obviously the 2023 class is gonna have a better staff to develop around once they get here. But I’m asking this merely from a perspective of recruiting and not knowing what was gonna happen after they arrived at UM.

That class had a lot of low quality players. We had 3 5* but also 16 kids that were 3* or less. And it was a huge class (32 kids) which was a big reason it was ranked #1.

I think this class. And all our classes moving forward, will have higher quality players. I'm not sure if I remember right but I don't think that class was even top 10 by average rating was it?

When all is said and done, Butchs 97-2000 classes are untouchable. Greatest job of evaluations, recruiting & development in UM History, and arguably NCAA History. Stars aren't everything. Great Staffs combined with Great coaching and development is where it's at.

I still say that butch’s last (01) and JJ’s last class (89) were the best ever. Jmo

This is facts but it was pre internet recruiting era. It would be interesting to see a blue chip ration of all the studs Butch signed…

I will agree with this there was a ton of low quality guys in that class but it was also top heavy. Forston was supposed to be the next great DT. Arthur Brown was supposed to be the next great ILB. We missed on Patrick Peterson even though he was considered a Cane lock until L$U came and snatched him. Brandon Harris was a stud at CB. Aldarius Johnson was supposed to be the next Andre but never could get his head out of his a**. Jacory was average at best the OC situation didn’t help him. Sean Spence was good but not amazing. David was indeed the best out of the MNW bunch and we missed him, to be fair he wasn’t considered a blue chip recruit. Randy Shannon couldn’t coach them up. They had potential but never developed.

The 08 class was wayyyyyyy overrated. Had absolutely no business being #1....Way imbalanced class.....too LBer top heavy. Bama EASILY had the #1 class...and it stood out quickly.
Now I will say this if it had been a different coach instead of Shannon that group could’ve been special. Our staff in that time frame was literally awful at developing talent.

I think this 23 class has a chance to go down as our best ever on paper.

We still have a solid shot to land these Top50 overall national prospects: Cormani McClain, Samson Okunlola, Damon Wilson, Hykeem Williams & Malik Bryant.

Not to mention filling out the rest of the class with some local studs and other guys Cristobal is working on. I really hope we can close with Bonsu at S and then get Hussey to jump on board as well. Damari Brown would be nice at CB and Stanquan Clark at LB. Obviously Wilson and Bain on the DL. On offense I see Andy Jean as a must get at WR and then swing for the fences with Hykeem. Chris Johnson Jr at RB. Samson and Kinsler to round out the offense and that’s a dream scenario.

The reason Jacory never blossomed into an All-American here like he was expected to be…
Often wonder how many players go into situations, whether here or elsewhere, that ends up failing them and they never develop into what they could've been. Its easy to say "if you are great, it'll show", but thats not the case with everyone. Some really need the coaching, development and push to get to where they were meant.

How is that even relavant in this discussion ?

The scope of the thread was pretty clear.

We get it, those years and players were great.

Had Butch stayed here and never left for Cleveland things would’ve played out very differently in the mid 2000s. We likely would have 2-3 more national titles under our belt. I say 2 at least.
