1983 Nebraska v Miami

For those of us old enough to have watched this game, what we all remember is that Nebraska going into the game was called the Team of the Century, or some such thing. They were definitely considered unbeatable. They had a Heisman trophy winner in RB Mike Rozier, and a very good QB in Turner Gill. They had a very good coach in Tom Osborne. And the game was in Miami. I don’t know what the betting line was back then, but likely as much or even more than -7.5.

Does that sound similar to what we have in 2026?

All that to say sometimes you have to tune out all the outside noise and believe in what you have on your team. This UM team believes in itself as did the 1983 team. And if we play a clean game like that team did, 2026 will be the same result.

I had a similar thought.

A win on the 19th should set up a string of championships over the rest of the 2020's like the 80's.

It’s very similar. They also had Irvin Fryer and an all American tackle Dean Steinkuhler(sp).

IIRC, the line was -18.

Not really quite frankly. Nebraska came in two and a half touchdown favorite. Our common opponent is Ohio State. Ryan Day **** the bed. Instead of kicking a 22 yarder to tie the game he elected to run Sayin on 4th and 1. Their kicker then choked a missed a 27-yarder.
 
They were crowning that Nebraska team as the greatest of all time. They featured Turner Gill, Irving Fryer, Dean Stienkhuler, and Heisman Trophy Winner Mike Rosier, and HC Tom Osborne. That's when Bernie, Eddie Brown, Shakespeare, Brophy, Fernandez, and Calhoun shocked the world 31-30, under HC Howard Schellenberger for UM's first NC. That's the first UM game I ever watched. That was in the historic Orange Bowl, home of UM's still NCAA record 58-game home winning streak. That was the genesis of UM's rise to the title.

It’s somewhat similar in the sense that no one is giving us a chance. It’s different in that the 83 Nebraska team was more feared in its day. I was at the game. Dean Steinkohler was that OL, Irving Friar I think at WR - they were calling them the team of the century. That’s not Indiana but we are a massive underdog in that no one thinks we win.

I get the whole underdog, no one expected Miami to be in this position, going up against the undefeated top ranked team, game is in Miami stuff.

But besides that, this is exactly NOTHING like that ‘83 matchup vs Nebraska.

The Canes have reached the mountain top FIVE times already. Indiana, on the other hand, has literally been one of the biggest losers of all time in FBS football. All time. They’ve only been good for a minute.

Nebraska was a perennial powerhouse program and that particular team was considered to be their best ever and maybe the best ever in the entire history of college football period.

The comparison isn’t working for me.

Try harder.

I remember the game well.

Mighty Nebraska had everything. Even a big writeup about just their weight room - couldn't believe it.

UM didn't have a chance - all the stats and numbers were against us.

They were the giants. Unfortunately for them - we were Giant Killers.

Like we've been THIS season.
 
I remember sitting in the WEZ watching Nebraska warm up and they looked like refrigerators with uniforms, huge!
It didn’t look promising…
