    The logic is clear: nobody cares about these "alternative" rankings. USN is the gold standard. You can be mad at how bad their methodology is all you want, but it's the reality.

    So UM should promote the UMass rankings to show they are better than what people think? I think that's a loser's game. Thomas Cooley Law School famously put out their own law school rankings a few years back countering U.S. News that showed they were the number 2 law school in the country...

    The criteria they use doesn't even matter. I'm not arguing that their criteria is sound or unsound. It's widely accepted as the gold standard, so it's the gold standard.

It doesn't mean that a higher ranked school is more prestigious than a lower ranked school, but it indicates that it is to the masses (i.e. people applying to college and people hiring people who graduate from college).     My grandmother famously said about her sister-in-law: "I might not be the best looking lady in the world, but Aunt Ruth is dumb and ugly." Well athletics sucked under Donna, no doubt. But at least we were moving up academically by the time she left. Frenk sucks at everything.

    You got a very good deal. There are about a dozen private universities/colleges that are worth going into debt for. If not, public is the way to go.
