After the attraction of playing for Coach K, here's perhaps the main reason Carey chose Duke. "They see me as a positionless player, they said I can be anywhere on the court. That worked well with me."

I think it's an open question whether VCJ really sees himself as a post player. In AAU games, he's noted for hanging around the perimeter. I would guess in his HS games, he played wherever he felt like playing.

Going with the hoops royalty. Not a surprise.

Exactly right! Duke would rebut your "numbers" argument (which is a good one) with "he'll get much more publicity/national exposure at Duke." Which is also true.

tc, so true. What's a mystery to me is how several have gone the whole year (or more) to become eligible, practicing with the team, acclimating to the university, etc. and then ... they suddenly quit or get the boot just before they could finally start playing. Makes no sense. In that 12 month...

We definitely have come a LONG way under Coach L in terms of recruiting the most sought after talent. That can only be good!

Agree on BB. Lonnie, OTOH, was seen by everyone as being, like VC Jr, truly exceptional. If you read a wide range of comments, Carey has some detractors. Not in terms of his talent and potential, but about his disappearing (wandering around the perimeter at 6'10, 270) in games, seeming lack of...

Moto, I'm still trying to understand what goes in elite recruit's heads, i.e., what you said about why a top player wouldn't want to be the focus of a team, rather than a cog. A great example is Oklahoma's Trae Young. He dominated the attention of the whole college basketball world in November...

What's his natural position? At the U school and in AAU games, understand he liked to play outside In your link, his HS coach points out how much Vernon likes to play on the perimeter. He makes it sound like that was to work on his skills for the pro game. I'd seen an earlier report about how...

LeBron was not the exception. Kobe, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, Jermaine O'Neal, Kevin Garnett, Moses Malone, Al Harrington, Darryl Dawkins, Rashard Lewis, Reggie Harding, Tyson Chandler, Amar'e Stoudamire, and on and on. Kwame Brown and Eddie Curry were busts. The rest all had long NBA...

They (the NBA) have been using college ball as their minor league system since forever. In terms of the NBA union wanting to protect jobs, pro sports is competitive, meaning if fringe players lose their current roster spots to more talented incoming 18 yr olds, so be it.

Why they shouldn't have to go to college at all. If you're an NBA prospect, you should be able to go directly to the pros (unless you are the exception like a Len Elmore or Bill Bradley who actually cares about a college education).

TC, true enough. Gotta wonder, though, in the college hoops landscape throughout its entire history, how many other titles would've also been vacated if investigated. Waaay more than Louisville's recent title and Villanova's back with Howard Porter. The recruiting scene in the 50s and 60s make...

Should have said "For" 10 or 11 consecutive seasons before the One and Done era. Think one of those Memphis teams did go to the Final Four (maybe the Championship Game?) plus I think all 10-11 of those teams were in the NCAAT.

Wasn't "one and done" rule adopted like in 2005 or thereabouts? Calipari won 20 games or more for UMass and Memphis 10 or 11 seasons before that!

    Carey update

Calipari was a very good HC long before the "one and done" rule existed. Am sure he'd have no trouble readjusting. If the powers-that-be really wanted to go 180 degrees from the "student athlete" mockery that college sports are today, they'd reinstitute freshman inelegibility. But, of course...

I'm heartened to hear the scouts' evaluation of him has improved over a year ago. Then, more than one service thought he had many shortcomings - despite his high number of "stars" - to address (standing around the perimeter and disappearing for stretches in games being the main ones). Agree we...
