Is the U on a shield a reference to “NFL U” or just a logistical way of getting the letter to stay its correct shape (or both)?

This, all day. I LOVED the 2000 through 2003 Nike unis but they crapped the bed big time after that. I would gladly take a crooked U and patches over clam helmets that changed color every week and horrible monochrome looks. But I’m old and most of you have been on my lawn far too long as it is! Lol
