Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I'm definitely an "evaluation > development" and "talent > coaching" type guy. I agree no coaches have that magic pixie dust. To me "lack of development" and "the OL sucks" are the Top 2 things that people just blindly throw out there with no idea if it's valid or not. They're so overused.

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

Talent level and stats/production are two different things to me. Atwell had more receiving yds at Louisville than Jeudy did at Bama, but is nowhere near as talented. I think Lashlee can get our guys to be more productive and put up better stats. It doesn't make our guys more talented, it's...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I agree with you. Again, I'm in the evaluation is much more important than development camp - and I think that's reflected in the players you named. But I do think development contributed to their success. I just have some issues with how the "development" argument is presented most of the...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I agree with all your points. Players can definitely get a bump in the draft because of their physical tools or the school they play for. Erik Swoope is a great example - TE from Miami that had a 5 yr NFL career and had never even played football. But my question still remains - outside of...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I'm using 2008 because Miami's talent fell off a cliff after the 2007 draft (2006 season). The last 12-13 years is a more realistic picture of where we're at, and @OriginalCanesCanesCanes asked you for examples of the last 10-12 years. You're using data from Miami's 2001 - 2015 teams, and the...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

The problem is we always compare Miami up, and never compare down. We act like the talent gap between Clemson and Miami is the same size gap between Miami and UNC. It's not. The truth is Miami's talent and UNC's talent is pretty close. But that's not something anyone wants to hear or admit.

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

This is extremely skewed. The last 10 years look drastically different from the last 15 years. Drafted 2002 - 2007 - 22 Miami players started in the NFL for 4+ years. All these guys were part of the 2003 recruiting class or earlier Drafted 2008 - 2015 - 11 Miami players started in the NFL for...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

It's fine to not focus on just All-Pro's, but you do have to account for talent in some way. Quantity doesn't equal Quality. The way you're looking at it now - you're placing equal value on a 1st Round Pick as a 7th Round pick. On the list below: - Miami's had 29 draft picks, 5 in the first...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I'm definitely in the evaluation is more important than development camp. I think being able to identify and go after underrated guys, while also identifying and staying away from overrated guys is a bigger factor to success than "development". Most stud players are pretty much studs from...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I agree with you - Miami's #1 WR's are nice players, but are probably only competing for the #3 WR at Clemson, Bama, OSU, etc. It's a totally different level. Ahmon Richards is the only guy we've had that's in that conversation. For all the "What went wrong with the 2018 team" conversations -...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

Couldn't agree with this more. Look at the WR's on the last 8 NC teams 2019 LSU - Jefferson, Chase 2018 Clemson - Higgins, Ross 2017 Alabama - Ridley, Jeudy, Ruggs 2016 Clemson - Mike Williams 2015 Alabama - Ridley 2014 Ohio St - Michael Thomas 2013 FSU - Benjamin 2012 Alabama - Cooper...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I never thought Dorsett was a 1st Round pick either. But even if he were taken in the 4th round, he would've well outplayed his recruiting ranking Dorsett - Ranked #383 but drafted #28 overall Hankerson - Ranked #367 but drafted #79 overall Hurns - Ranked #515 & UDFA - but had best single...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

I have a different outlook on this. LSU has signed at least twice, maybe 3 times as many Top 150 WR's than Miami in the last 10-15 years. They have more hits than us, but also have more misses simply because they have greater numbers. My opinion is we get some but not enough highly rated...

Takeaway from the coach’s roundtable on ESPNU

WR talent has been hurting us for a while Allen Hurns, Travis Benjamin, Phillip Dorsett, Leonard Hankerson - those are our best WR's since Andre Johnson graduated. All are NFL players, so not to take anything away from them - but all are more #3 NFL WR type talents. You can blame our QB's...
