I can't make the comparison but how many excellent DTs did JJ bring in: Russ Maryland, Cortez Kennedy, Jimmie Jones. Two first rounders there, and a guy who signed a record FA contract for a DT when he left the the Cowboys. How many did Butch sign? Wilfork, Joseph first round? Who else? I...

Not knowing the figures, I'll bet JJ moved off of that. After a bad experience with non-qualifiers and prop-48s his first year or two, Johnson expressed his frustration and and decided to "go up the road" to find qualified players. I remember him using thise words. I think prop 48 came in after...

Not sure it was all Butch. Talked to people back then who said it was JJ who had uncanny ability to discern a kid's athletic potential. I heard that he could even look at a kid's parents and figure that out Build a wall? Gotta try...walls are good.

Under JJ we recruited Houston heavily and liked Jersey as well. Over the years we went into and dropped out of areas as we hired or lost coaches who knew an area. With Curtis Johnson under Butch, we went heavily into Louisiana-- hence, Ed Reed and Reggie Wayne. Brennan Carroll and we tried...

A lot of the local recruits were academically weak--either poor grades, bad test scores, or both. Prop 48's. JJ hated Prop 48's. Decided to expand recruiting beyond south Florida. Looked more nationally (but not to north Florida or SEC country where we had very little appeal.) I recall hearing...

Story I heard was that JJ first met McGuire at NY Athletic Club when he went there for Vinnie's Heisman award. The NYAC just awarded McGuire their high school Heisman. They gave it to relatively unheralded local HS stud McGuire. I guess JJ didn't know much about him but got interested and we...

True test of a class might be the percentage that turn out to be real contributors. Here the percentage is fairly high. Look at JJ's first two classes. They were much worse.

Yes. Overweight backup DT. They told him if he lost weight he'd be an A-A. He lost weight.

We still lost a lot of recruiting battles on those last two classes. A lot.

He was recruited by Hubbard Alexander, I'm quite sure. There was a HS coach in one of the other cities Alexander used to recruit--either Memphis or Chicago-- by the same name. EDIT: Looked it up and there was a Carlos Etheredge who coached at various times at Douglass, East and Melrose high...

Back then you could count the number of South Florida players on the UF roster on two hands. UG stayed out of South Florida, believe it or not.

Where? Pinole? Not the first guy we had from there.
