    May 1st is the date that "A PLAYER MUST ADVISE THEIR CURRENT SCHOOL THAT THEY ARE ENTERING THE PORTAL" in order to be eligible to play this season. The commitment date simply has to be in time to enroll for classes by the time practices begin.
