@dukemv @Torocane To be clear, I'm not absolving the D of all blame on the season. They regressed a bit from the previous two seasons, both in counting stats and via everyone's favorite bull**** metric: "the eye test". They were about the 25th ranked unit, which is good but not great. That's...

They definitely were not an offensive juggernaut. I'm just illustrating that we weren't getting smoked on D, and implying that we were getting smoked on O.

They averaged 26 and we gave up 30. Obviously a bad performance. Of course, equally important in that game was the offense getting shut out in the first half and only getting a field goal in the 3rd quarter.

    Defensive Rankings

I said using App State as the measuring stick was arbitrary, not our overall record. However, using our overall record to measure our defense is obviously a poor choice since the offense (which was objectively awful) contributes equally to that. To your point about top offenses we faced...

We also played UF, UVA, Louisville, and UNC which were all top-40. Defense was definitely down from last couple years level, but they weren't remotely horrible. You can look at weighted rankings, efficiency rankings, other advanced metrics, etc and Canes are consistently ranked around #25 on D...

Canes had a 9-3 defense and a 3-9 offense. The D took a step back from their level of the last two years, but it was still pretty good. "Trailing App State" seems like a really arbitrary measurement. You could just as easily say Canes were "way ahead of Oklahoma."

    Defensive Rankings

Time of possession is over-rated, and there's no guarantee we'd even get worse at that. Miami was #72 in FBS @ 29:47/game and SMU was #87 @ 28:52. One extra minute on the field is not going to turn our defense into a bad unit. The absolute worst team in the country was Utah State @ 26:02 and the...
