OT: How about an OTH (otherthanhiphop) music thread?

This is a long version and gets a bit out there in a jazz/rock way, but it is 30 minutes of incredible improvisational music.

It’s always interesting where samples come from. **** Black Cow by Steely Dan is one of the most recognizable hip hop samples, which is wild. If you want to dig into sort of the forefathers of electronica, check out some of Brian Enos’s stuff. Interesting guy who produced for a ton of...

Their concert DVD Live at the Isle of Wight is one of my favorite concert movies. A good chunk of it is filmed from behind Keith Moon, so it is pretty much him in his manic state going mental behind the drums. Highly recommend. Quadrophenia is my favorite of their albums as well. I actually...

Happy Friday, y'all. May it be as funky as the start to Robert Palmer's start to Sneakin Sally Through the Alley album. The Meters were his backing band for the album and it shines through.

**** yes LCE. I have seen him in all different bands, superjams, etc. He is a fixture around New Orleans during jazzfest time, and have been to many shows of his that ended sometime between 6 am and 7 am. Great addition to the thread with these videos.

Some newer jazz... I like John Scofield and the guitar in their mix like in this video, but the traditional Medeski Martin Wood jazz trio line up can get OUT THERE. If you like some really strange avant garde acid jazz and want to go places, these guys can do it.

It is awesome. It starts at the roots of the tree and how the genre started, how different instruments came into it, and then the different styles and regional differences. I thought it was one of his best (along w the Civil War, The War, Vietnam).

Phish is a polarizing band and one that gets the hippie dip pie ****ery rap. But check this version of Ghost out. A funky tune that goes rock on the night.

Here’s a fun one with Prince. When Miles Davis started playing music again in the early 80s, he saw Prince as the next James Brown. Prince used to have New Years Eve concerts at Paisley Park. This is a recording of NYE 1987 with Miles sitting in for the show. One of my great concert regrets...

I’ll toss a fun fact out. However, his most famous work was...
