That's an old myth from the days of offenses running the I-formation. If you're employing a 1-gap 3-4 your LB's don't have to be any bigger than 4-3 LB's. (a 1-gap 3-4 is basically a 4-3 post-snap) And your nose doesn't have to be any bigger than a 4-3 1-technique.
