I always thought that the NCAA should limit the scholarship cap from 85 to say 75, I thought that would bring a little parity to the game. But I think the transfer portal's doing a better job of culling the herd.
Changed in 2015 for P5. Now if you play at a Group Of Five school your scholarship's year to year.

That's for new coaches (see Deion last year). But a coach that's been at the same school for a number of years can't cut you for athletic performance reasons. They did away with the 1 year non-renewals in 2015.
