He’s like the Utah OC. Where the offense just seems like a horrible fit for what Miami should run. But the results can’t be ignored.

Right. In one off-season Briles took it from 53 to 26. There’s no reason to believe Applewhite had anything to do with that. Go look at FAU before Briles, with Briles, after Briles. Go look at FSU before, with, after. Then look at Applewhite. There’s no reason to believe Applewhite had...

The difference between Applewhite and Brile’s offensive rankings are so significant, there’s almost no way Applewhite had anything to do with Briles. Especially when you look at all of Briles’ other stops, and the huge immediate jumps in offensive production. Then compare that to Applewhite’s...

Monken also wasnt exactly a falling star when UGA got him. He had been hired to be the OC at Tampa. He didn’t get fired, the coach did, and the new guy brought in his guy. He’s then the OC at Cleveland, but isn’t allowed to call plays because the HC does, so he goes somewhere to continue to...

But Monken also got there right when Kirby had fully stacked classes. How good is he if here’s there in Year 1?

Yeah. If you look at Bill Connelly’s S&P+ preseason projections, it projected the LSU offensive to be *very* good in the upcoming season. And that’s not factoring in Brady, because the numbers can’t factor that in.

He will be here as long as Mario wants him to be here. He’s never going to produce an offense that results in him being hired away. So he’ll be here until he’s fired. Which is scary, because he won’t be fired anytime soon. It’s also crazy to argue stability matters at the OC position. What...

People need to understand that Cristobal doesn’t want to run the kind of offenses that score a bunch of points. And I get that sounds crazy. But it isn’t an uncommon mindset. ****, you can go back to the days of Paul Brown, when he started throwing the football. Opposing coaches would say...

Yep. Applewhite is probably the best we were going to get if you’re realistic about Mario.

Briles. Ward was the QB when Applewhite was OC under TH.

But the analytic models didn’t say the offense was good. They said the offense was sh*t. And they were right.

Dont’ know. Maybe not for that season. But what did they do the other seasons? Analytic models are great. I agree there can be outliers that require even more context. Injuries. Maybe you played 4 games that year in the snow. Etc. But when you’re making those arguments over the...

Not really. I like F+ because it’s a composite of two really good models. So you get a 2 for 1, and also avoid “stat shopping.” But I also like Reddit’s EPA. And others. I’m also not sure what stats I should be into though? It can’t just be “yards” and such.

Actually one of the biggest faults I have with analytic models is that it doesn’t factor in talent enough. Like when S&P+ would constantly have Wisconsin as a Top 10 team and legit NC contender. I would always say, “just give me the team with the recruiting class rankings.” Same thing with...

I don’t care who your QB is. If you want to be the OC of my team, you can’t have the 123rd ranked offense. Bad QB play can’t be all it takes for you to have literally the exact same results I would have at OC.

Absolutely. Or Houston having King and others sit out the rest of the season so they could all transfer. Stuff like that can be important. But people use that to explain away a career of sh*tty seasons. Like you can do that was Nuss. Hoke was collapsing at Michigan. Muschamp demanded he...

What would you expect to annually score per game against defenses that average out to say 80th ranked defense overall? Or better yet, what do you think a *bad* defense would average against that?

lets pretend what you’re saying is correct. He was given the 41st ranked offense was a superstar at QB that was now an upperclassman, and did nothing with it? And yeah, I think context is always helpful. I think at some point it becomes silly. Like if there’s always an excuse, and that...
