Top 5 Dade County Basketball Players Ever in High School

If we're talking just off HS merit, NO CHANCE Richmond is best from South FL. However, if we're talking best ever including college and pro careers I don't think anyone from South Florida has a better resume than Mitch "The Rock" Richmond.

Top 5 Dade County Basketball Players Ever in High School

This was part of my original post in this thread back in April 2022... Solely based off their HS careers, in my eyes the best 5 to ever come out of the 305 are: 1. Doug Edwards (Miami High c/o 1989) - McDonald's AA, ranked the #2 player in the country (behind Kenny Anderson) in 1989. Was the...

Steve was the best player I played against in HS. There's no telling how his career would've gone had he not screwed up his knee playing pick up on campus. Based strictly off HS resumes, I think B Knight is the #1 HS player to ever come out of South Florida. His 2 Gatorade POYs, multiple state...

Top 5 Dade County Basketball Players Ever in High School

If we're basing it solely off HS resumes, Cameron Boozer is without a doubt one of the top 5 players to ever come out of Dade County. Can make a strong case for the #1 spot.

Not sure I'd put Neal Walk among the top 5 in Dade County HS Basketball. He was way before my time, but from what some of the old heads have told me he was an ok player in high school who didn't really become known til his senior year at Beach High. No one saw what was to come though. He had a...

Cameron Boozer will end up making the top 5 players in Dade County HS history list. Strong case for #1. If it's not already, it will be by the time it's all said and done.

Agreed. Portillo and Martinez success at the High certainly didn't translate to the collegiate and/or pro levels. That still doesn't take away from the fact that at the HS level they helped form one of the greatest HS basketball teams in Dade County history.

When I think of Pace basketball, Alex Fraser (former UM hooper) immediately comes to mind. In more recent years, Ray Taylor (a pro scout once told me he was considered one of the best under 5'7" players in the world), Ray Shipman (NFL) and Rakeem Buckles (Louisville) were all Spartan standouts...

Those Miami High teams were great. With guys like Portillo, Gimel Martinez, Jose Ramos, Doug Edwards, etc. they formed quite a squad. On paper though, the most talented high school team in Dade County history might be the 1974 Miami Jackson squad aka the Jackson 5. That team went 33-0 and won...

Haslem was a very good basketball player in HS and college, but no one could've imagined he'd have a 20-year NBA career. It's crazy how his basketball career took off once he transformed his body. Funny thing is as a youngster in HS, people were always in his ear about it.

Good list. Dewan and Corey "Tree" Louis are the only McDonald's All-American's on this list. It's crazy how your top 3 names had very good NBA careers. Don't think many folks, if any saw that coming. Dwayne would've had a chance had his work ethic been better. Blessed with great natural and...

All kidding aside, the only Guardiola I remember on the local basketball scene was Willy Guardiola. Back in the 80's and 90's he ran one of the best basketball camps down here. Not sure if he's related to the Guardiola's you're referring to, but that's all I got on that.

Feels like you're pulling my chain. I've never heard of him. I know the Guardiola name. Even know Pep, but don't know him or anyone else by that name to be an actual player.

I could be wrong, but I believe former UM OL Freeman Brown (RIP) was also on that team with Claxton at CC.

Stephon and Sebastian were 2 of the best HS PGs I'd ever seen. Only player who I thought was better than those 2 in HS was Iverson. I got to see him up close and personal and actually played against him in a Converse Basketball Camp in Maryland back in 92. People back then were raving about...

Not sure if this is the same guy, but Gulliver had a Coach Hickox back in the 80's who if I'm not mistaken played at UM in the late 50's, early 60's. He used to tell us he was Miami's first All-American, even before Rick Barry. Don't think he was originally from Miami though.

Doug Edwards (Miami High c/o 1989) - McDonald's AA, ranked the #2 player in the country (behind Kenny Anderson) in 1989. Was the catalyst in Miami High's national resurgence in the 80's. If he doesn't...
