A ball carrier can’t fumble backward? Would need to see the text of rule you’re reading. I’ve seen the similar plays ruled the same many, many times. Ball carrier fumbles, the ball rolls backwards, out of bounds, and the ball is spotted where the ball went out of bounds.

At least the no-safety and late fumble calls were correct.
