It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Good analysis, and this is exactly why I said that for football, most of the money would just be existing bag money coming out from under the table. Football recruits coming out of high school, with few exceptions, have no real monetary value to anybody but crazy boosters who want to cheat to...

My bad. I did miss that in your first post.

Maybe in basketball. The economics in football don’t work like that for the shoe companies, which is why they aren’t involved today.

So, a kid who has already completed his high school football career could still sign a deal while still in high school. Same thing. It will massively impact recruiting.

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Any NBA D-League team would destroy any college basketball team. Yet, nobody watches the D-league. Any MLB minor league team would destroy any college baseball team. Yet, nobody watches minor league baseball.

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

LOL if you are going to use the impact arguably the most popular athlete in the history of sports had on minor league baseball as support for your argument here. That's not even remotely comparable. Also, despite the better talent that this minor league would get, the play would be garbage...

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Not in a state that just passed a law making it illegal to punish kids at any level for profiting from their likeness.

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Nobody watches any minor leagues that currently exist today, so there’s absolutely no reason to believe people would watch a new minor league for football. You’re purely guessing whereas my belief is supported by actual history.

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

The fan base watches Miami in hopes of Miami winning an NC, that's it. Nothing else matters.

Thanks for engaging in some dialogue. IMO, it's all relative. The level of play would decline across the board so it would be hardly noticeable. Besides, people are rabid about their schools, and that alone would continue to drive the massive revenues. Maybe revenues would drop a small amount...

@Canesince02 what specifically about this post do you disagree with?

1:1 on number of scholarship, not number of sports. That's why there are more women's sports at any given university in order to make up for the large scholarship numbers in football.

They can sign deals in high school. Nothing about this law limits them to only signing deals after they get in college.

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

The fans of college football (i.e., the people who are the source of all the money the system makes) don't care about the athletes. They care about their favorite school. Yes, the players have some economic value in the system, but the overwhelming majority of the economic value comes from the...

It's Official: California to let college athletes make money, defying NCAA

Also, nothing in the law says a player has to wait until after they've started their careers in the school of their choice.

When it comes to CFB, California is an afterthought. They absolutely do not move the needle. Hopefully the rest of the NCAA institutions simply tell CA to F-OFF and watch how quickly CA reverses course.

This law doesn't allow schools to pay players. It allows players to profit externally.

They are, but the only thing that makes these minor league franchises valuable is the school logo.
