Video: DeAndre Wilder vs. Norland

I had the chance to check out the "Miami Gardens Bowl" tonight between Carol City and Norland. I had my eyes particularly close on Carol City LB DeAndre Wilder, who is playing almost primarily as a pass rushing defensive end this season.

Miami likes Wilder's burst, but his transition to full-time defensive end this season almost validates their concerns of him as too much of a "tweener" prospect. I was impressed with Wilder's motor and he's not a guy who takes plays off. He will need to add strength to be able to compete at the point of attack in college.

Again I'm not sure he's a take for Miami at this point, but certainly a talented player that the Canes coaches will monitor. My main question is where do you put him on the field?

Note: I recorded nearly all of Wilder's snaps and I've included clips where he doesn't exactly make a huge play. I just want the viewers to be learn as much as they can about Wilder from the video.

WILDER IS #10 IN WHITE

Maybe learn some sort of move to get around the tackle? Engaging with him every play didn't seem too effective.

Thanks Pete.

In my eyes I don't see how he's a take right now. Dude's game film just doesn't stand out. One to monitor though

Doesn't this dude run a 4.76 forty at 196 pounds? What happens when he gains enough weight to transition to a linebacker at the next level? Not impressed with the measurables or the game tape, I pass.

Pete I like how didn't completely invalidate the kid and left it for self evaluation.

Let me say the CC staff doing the kid an injustice by having him play DE. They would be better served and he too to be exclusively an outside LB, to run free and make plays. He's what I saw:

1. He would be a fast LB
2. He held the edge against bigger LT and sometimes double teams. Gotta learn to get around these bigger guys and use his speed
3. He has a nice frame that can easily add muscle. He's as big (taller) than both current commits and I'll argue as fast.
4. Lastly the kid is a competitor, doesn't take plays off, can go sideline to sideline and is athletic.

Great job showing other plays!! Too often we only see highlights and we don't see how he/they do the other 80-90% of the time!

As far as skill, definitely looks quick and doesn't load around. But only seems to know a bull rush move! No spins, no use of hands to get off blocker (swims or rips). All can be taught, I guess...

Why don't they play him at LB? Is CC just weak on dline? Or are there better linebackers ahead of him?

All those skills can and will be taught if he comes here. Look no further then the development of DJax. Buddy looks like a completely different DE right now due to Kool teaching him diff techniques. So thats the last thing I am worried about.

Its amazing how a year ago this time DWilder was probably a Top 3 recruit on our Big Board now he is not even a take? Lets see..

Big time motor and doesnt take plays off? Check.

Sideline to Sideline speed? Check.

Runs Track at LB? Check.

Comes from a school with the lowest bust rate of any team in the area? Check.

Not sure what the problem is here. He wont be needed right away. Redshirt him. Let him gain good weight and learn the position. Then turn him loose in two years.

This. And Carol City kids DONT BUST. You take a kid from Carol City HS and hes gonna ball out for you. Period. I would be damned to let this kid go to AUB and regret it 3-4 years later.

The last Carol City kid we passed on because people thought he was too much of a tweener?...Robert Sands. Ended up ballin' out at WVU at Safety (during a time where our own Safety play was HORRIBLE) and cashed a few NFL checks with the KC Chiefs too. After him I knew that we could never make that mistake again.

Shayon Green or Terell McCray?

He looks bigger than 196. How heavy is he? IMO, if we had a big class coming in (>25), I'd lean to taking him but with a class with precious limited spots left, don't think there's room for a tweener like him.

Pass.

How can this kid be a take, yet we didn't offer Ventrel Miller who was very interested, but committed to the turds b/c we slow played him.

Miller is one of my favorite LBs in FL this cycle.

Not everyone is a finished product coming out, he's most likely playing DE out of neccessity. Take a local stud like Wilder Redshirt and develop him.. **** we developed Mike Smith into a servicable LB and he was a DE in high school. Wilder is a way better athlete And has the makings of a prototypical Miami OLB

Trayone Gray was a disappointment. I thought he was Dalvin Cook-esque, I was so wrong.

This kid actually reminds me a lot of Mike Smith, who looked way better off the edge and had more quick twitch than Wilder.

No more DE/OLB tweeners at LB please.
