UM commit Brownlee lands UF offer, but still strong with Miami

Stefan Adams
From childhood, most of Carol City (FL) DB Jarvis Brownlee’s college football experience revolved around the Miami Hurricanes. That’s why, when the Canes offered him a chance to be in their 2019 class, he hopped on it almost immediately, committing to UM the very next week. Brownlee was last on campus for Paradise Camp two weekends back and detailed how his experience went.

“I couldn’t make it to the pool party on Friday. I went the next day on Saturday, to come talk to the guys and watch,” Brownlee said on Paradise. “From what I saw and watched, there was a lot of competition going on. I enjoyed it, it was fun to watch and hang out with the coaches and former teammates.”

Even though Brownlee is on already board in the class, that doesn’t mean the Canes have slowed down their contact with him in any way, and are treating him like a top target. Brownlee reports that Mike Rumph, Ephraim Banda, and Mark Richt are contacting him every day and making him feel wanted.

“All 3 of them stay in touch with me consistently, every day,” Brownlee said. “Every day I’m waking up to a text, things like that, just the little things that play in. Our relationship is great, they told me I can come any time to practice to watch.

“I’m also close with Coach DVD (Demarcus Van Dyke). I’ve known him since when I was at Hallandale my 10th grade year, the bond has just been building since then. He told me every day to keep working hard and it was going to pay off, and it finally paid off and I thank him for that.”

The 5'11" 175 pound athlete plays mostly cornerback and that’s the spot where UM is recruiting him, but has also moonlighted at safety at times, notably at one of Mark Richt’s 7-on-7 camps during the off-season.

“Right now, I really like corner, but I feel like I can play anywhere on the field on defense,” Brownlee said. “I’m an athlete.”

Since his commitment to Miami back in June, Brownlee has predictably begun to see more interest from other schools. He landed an offer from the Florida Gators last month, and says UF, along with two other programs, are pushing hard for a flip.

“Right now, Florida, UCF and Marshall (are pushing). Those 3 right now,” Brownlee said. “I will probably take a visit to Florida and UCF aside from Miami.”

When talking about the toughest receiver he went against last year, Brownlee’s first thought went to current Miami freshman corner Nigel Bethel, who played both ways for Miami Northwestern last season.

“Who can I give that to? I can’t really say anybody because I’m always giving everybody the work, but during the season last year I’ll give it to Nigel Bethel,” Brownlee said. “I had gave up a bomb to him in a game, that’s the one pass I had gave up.”

As a rising senior, Brownlee knows this is his last chance to win a state title with all the teammates he grew up playing with. So, in 2018, going out on top is the main goal, but that’s not to say Brownlee doesn’t have personal goals as well.

“This year, I just want to be the best player I can be for my team this year to get us to the state title. We come in and we work hard every day,” Brownlee said. “All our coaches ask for is attendance and effort and that’s what we try to get them the most. We know it’s not going to be easy [to win states] this year, but we’re going to keep pushing forward for our coaches. I also want 8 interceptions or more and to make first team All-Dade. Make MVP for defensive player of the year.”

After the season, Brownlee plans on signing early in December. And his message for the Canes’ fans out there that have followed his recruitment?

“Let’s get ready to take this state. You know, to get this championship ring. Surge19, CaneGang baby!”

Manny Diaz on the "Stars Rating"----'If you can play on these fields down here in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach county, you can play. And it doesn’t matter how many stars [ie ranking] you have next to your name, or what a magazine or the internet says about you. If you can prove yourself on the field down here on Friday Night, then you can play. And those are the guys that we want to be Hurricanes. '

He is still maturing body wise. In our S&C he will be 190 or more, no problem and can lay even more wood on the opposition--Go Chiefs!
