The California Golden Bears dipped their toes into the Big Ten conference and came away with a big fish from the Oregon Ducks coaching staff. California athletic director Ron Rivera hired Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi.
James Franklin built a name for himself with the Penn State Nittany Lions as he had several successful seasons. However, finishing 14th in the Big Ten conference with an overall record of 7-6, he was fired from being the head coach. Virginia Tech then made their move in his direction after firing previous head coach Brent Pay.
