Miami freshman guard Sheldon Henderson has been recognized as one of the top freshman guards in the nation by several media outlets, and now ESPN has named the former five-star small forward one of the top 50 newcomers in college basketball.
Here's what ESPN had to say about Henderson:
Henderson is as physically ready as any freshman in the country, so Jai Lucas is likely to rely on the former Duke signee from the first game of the season. NBA scouts have frequented Coral Gables, with Henderson -- a versatile perimeter playmaker being the main attraction.
According to ESPN, Henderson is ranked as the No. 35 newcomer in college basketball, while Kansas' new guard Darryn Peterson holds the No. 1 spot.
Henderson boasts a well-built physique that Miami could certainly utilize from day one. It's rare to see a player with such a strong build at the freshman level, especially considering his movement.
During his senior season at Bellaire, Henderson averaged 22.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals, leading Bellaire to its first-ever state title game, where they lost to Duncanville by just two points.
Not only is he receiving high praise from the media, but he is also being recognized by the Hurricanes seniors, such as Tre Donaldson, who calls him one of the top freshmen in the nation.
“Shelton Henderson is going to be one of the best freshmen in the country,” Donaldson said. “His physical presence is ridiculous, and his ability to get downhill. I’ve been around a lot of freshmen. K.D. Johnson getting downhill is ridiculous, and Shelton Henderson can get downhill. He doesn’t get the love he deserves.”
