Shelton Henderson: “It was kind of an easy decision, and I think I made the right one.”
Shelton Henderson announced last week that he’ll return to play for the Miami Hurricanes in the 2026–27 season.
CanesInSight’s Peter Ariz sat down with the freshman standout to discuss why he chose to return for another year, reflect on his freshman season, and share what he wants to improve on. When Henderson was asked about coming back to Miami, he didn’t hesitate to play for Jai Lucas.
Here’s what he said:
“I just sat down with my family. I think it was in the best interest for me to come back. I think it’s going to be great for me, myself, and the team. Being a Hurricane is something I’ve really grown into, and being here has been great for me. The environment and the people have allowed me to play my best and be the best version of myself. So coming back was kind of an easy decision, and I think I made the right one.”
He also talked about how quickly he made the decision after the 2025–26 season and just the importance of the coaching staff:
“I want to get back in the gym with my coaches and my guys. As soon as the season was over, I sat down with my family and we talked about the next step. But knowing what the player development is like here, and having coaches and pieces around me that believe in me and can get me to that next level, made it an easy decision to make that quickly.”
During the 2025-26 season, Shelton finished the year with 13.7 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He also shot 55.9 percent form the floor, and shot 26 percent form behind the arc.
With Henderson returning that will be one less spot for Miami to target in the portal. And Jai Lucas gets one of the best freshman in the country staying for another year.
