Miami throttles FAMU: Recap and Notes

Saturday night looked how it was supposed to look for Mark Richt’s debut as Miami’s head coach – the lights were bright in the newly renovated Hard Rock Stadium, the stands were filled, and the Hurricanes dominated the game with a 70-3 win over Florida A & M.

Miami opened scoring on Brad Kaaya’s first attempt of the season – a one-yard reception from Canes fullback Marquez “Pops” Williams. The Canes did not look back from there.

Miami held a 28-3 lead at half on the strength of two Joseph Yearby scores and two Kaaya tosses. Tight end Chris Herndon had a 16-yard touchdown reception up the middle of the seam.

Running backs Mark Walton and Joseph Yearby led the ground attack for Miami, both going over 100 yards. Walton’s 37-yard touchdown rush in the third quarter and Yearby’s 64-yarder in the second quarter were respectively the longest rushes of their Canes careers. Gus Edwards had one carry up until late in the third quarter when he busted off a 74-yard touchdown run.

Canes quarterback Brad Kaaya finished the game 12-18 for 135 yards and four touchdowns. He was pulled from the game at the 4:04 mark of the third quarter for Malik Rosier, who won the backup QB battle. Rosier scored a touchdown on a 19-yard run on a keeper after a fake toss rollout.

Braxton Berrios returned a punt for a touchdown for 41 yards to extend the Canes’ lead to 49-3.

Miami’s 42-point third quarter gave them a 70-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter, when many of the backups and younger players received burn and were able to make an impact.

Defensive end Patrick Bethel blocked a FAMU punt in the first quarter. Running back Travis Homer tackled the Rattlers’ punter after a mishandled snap in the third quarter. Ahmmon Richards scored his first career touchdown on a 15-yard run after catch on a screen.

All in all, it was everything that Miami fans could have asked for to begin the Richt era. Next up for the Hurricanes -- a week two matchup with Florida Atlantic at Hard Rock Stadium next Saturday.

Other notes
**60,703 was the announced attendance for tonight’s game at Hard Rock stadium.

**Miami had three 100-yard rushers tonight with Walton, Yearby, and Edwards. The only other time in the modern era that the Canes had three 100-yard rushers in a game was 1987 against Cincinnati.

**Trent Harris, who has a fractured hand, did not play in tonight’s game until the fourth quarter. He played with heavy wrap on his left hand.

**Demetrius Jackson, who started in AQM and Harris’ absence, had a big game for the Canes. Jackson had 2 sacks and 3 TFL.

**Canes LB Shaq Quarterman led the team in tackles with 7 and he had 2.5 TFL.

**True freshmen Malek Young, Romeo Finley, Cedrick Wright, Jeff James, Joseph Jackson, and Dionte Mullins all saw reps for the Canes as well.

**Corn Elder and Adrian Colbert both had interceptions at cornerback for Miami.

**Braxton Berrios’ punt return TD was the first

**Miami’s 70 points was the first time that a Mark Richt-coached team scored 70 and it was the fourth time in school history.

**Miami scored 42 points in the third quarter alone.

**Kicker Mike Badgley was 0-1 on field goal attempts.

**Evan Shirreffs was the third quarterback in the game for Miami and took over the last series for the Hurricanes.

**Prior to the game, Miami officially announced that defensive tackle Gerald Willis was suspended for one game. He will return next week. Freshman wide receive Sam Bruce will serve a three-game suspension.

**Sophomore linebacker Jamie Gordinier, who is expected to take a lot of reps this season, left the game after the second defensive series of the game wth an apparent injury.

Two questions Mr. Brow:

1. Is Jenkins seriously hurt?

2. Why were these players still in the game?

Great write up. One thing: Trent Harris was in for one play in the first quarter. His giant hulk hand was hard to miss.

And to think, we saw only a fraction of the playbook on both sides of the ball.

The Bethel block was the highlight of the game. That's a true freshman DT/DE making that play.

Jenkins is a 3rd string DT. With Willis, Moten, and Martin out, who exactly was supposed to be in if not him?

Just got home from the game. Couldn't be happier. They demolished an inferior team and it was never even close to being competitive. Props to all the UM fans that showed up. Huge crowd for a FAMU game. At least 50,000. If you want to nit pick, there was a couple mistakes but overall both sides looked explosive and aggressive. 100% satisfied.

Saw some things to fix, but with the staff we have, I beleive the will be addressed!

He was second string. You play anyone. He doesn't have to play DT even. Play a ***ing cone.

Not for nothing, since Norton was on the field the last snap of the game, I don't think you get it.

Regarding your second question, nobody else to play, basically.

Seriously? Was FAMU coming back?

You play a walk-on. You play anyone that doesn't matter. The game was ***ing over.

Who cares, you find a way to complain about anything.

Ignored

Ill move illkunt.

What I want to know from the people who were there is how LOUD was it compared to the same size crowd pre-roof?

Also, I found it interesting that Shirreffs came in as 3rd string. I think he was the guy the coaching staff wanted to step up to take the #2 spot, but had some issues.

Berrios is gonna have a great year. Running backs looked great. Give homer a shirt. D line was best I have seen in years. D J and Chad are monsters. Jaquan is a baller. Special teams will win us a couple games this year.

They have to get guys reps. Remember alot of them have never played, even if they are starters. Plus we don't have alot of bodies. We just don't. Just awesome to see our DL getting on the backfield again. It will get gradually tougher. We are going to be fine on O. On defense is where I'm worried.

70 points handing the ball off and making plays.

Nothing fancy at all.

Starting four on the D-Line have a chance to be a special group. Three sophomores there as well.

Loved Marquez blocking. Loved the WRs blocking.

He quietly had a big game tonight and should have a monster season. Might be the best tackler on the team.
