Fans are watching the safety position closely after last year's struggles. One reason for optimism is the continued development of fourt-year-player Markeith Williams. He spoke to CanesInSight about his progress, the DB room, and more:
On how he feels headed into Year Four:
Feeling great. Feeling like Year One all over again. I'm learning a new defense. It feels great to be in here and actually be a leader to the young guys and show them multiple ways how to go along throughout college.
On gaining a few pounds over the summer:
Gained a few pounds over the summer by just working out hard. Putting in work with all my brothers. I'm 185 right now.
On his versatility:
Just getting the feel to play every position on the field, corner, nickel, safety, even knowing what the linebacker is doing. Knowing everybody's job makes your job easier. I feel like I should be in a position where they can put me anywhere on the field.
On the biggest difference from freshman year to now:
Maturity. I grew up a lot, going through multiple safeties in front of me, multiple coaches. I had a good coach every year, and changed every year. Knowing the ins and outs throughout the building, and the business side, too.
On the connection between you and the DB coaches:
With the multiple DB coaches I had, they all kind of know each other. The kind of coach all alike. It's great having these new coaches coming from Auburn, Florida, the University of Houston. Coach Etheridge has been in multiple places, so he has good experience with DBs. He knows the ins and outs of how to be great and how to be sophisticated throughout the field.
On his goals for the season:
Do things for the team to put everyone in the right position. So just winning. That's the goal. Winning and balling out.
