Malachi Toney, Darian Mensah Given Odds To Win Heisman

After spring practices ended for just about every team in the country, DraftKings released its post spring odds for the Heisman, and two Hurricanes made the list.

New Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah and sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney both received odds to win the Heisman Trophy.

Here is what the odds look like, according to DraftKings:

Malachi Toney and Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith are the only two wide receivers with DraftKings odds to win the Heisman. While, Mensah has the ninth-best odds to win the trophy, ranking as the No. 8 quarterback in the country, just behind Josh Hoover.

Mensah enters the season coming off a strong year at Duke, throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns with just six interceptions in 14 games.

Toney is coming off one of the best freshman seasons in Miami history, totaling 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 games while leading all freshmen in receptions and receiving yards. He earned ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year and FWAA Freshman All-American honors, becoming the first Miami freshman to surpass 1,000 receiving yards.

That duo of Toney and Mensah.

What if I told you, in the last 6 games to end a season, a player put up these numbers, and he was playing for one of the marquee programs in America and had likely the best WR corps in America? You'd think he was a Heisman candidate, for sure.

134/215 (62.3%), 1714 yards (285 per game, 8 yards per attempt), 14 TDs, 2 INTs.
34 carries, 206 yards, 5 TDs.

(Of note, what you said isn't wrong. The hype he got headed into last season was insane. But I'm buying this year. He might just stink, but I'm betting on this production extrapolated to a full season, Year 2 as a starter)

I'll tell you now, if he doubles those numbers this year (for a full season) and Texas wins the SEC or even plays for it, he's probably going to win it.

3500 yards, 28 TDs, 4 picks, double-digit rushing TDs probably wins you the trophy if you're a playoff team.

I honestly think Toney has a better chance than most think mainly because he'll have punt return opportunities and he'll likely throw a couple TD passes. The Heisman is more about memorable plays that stick in people's minds than stats.

Agree. In the last 35 years, the only true WRs to win the award are Desmond Howard and Devonta Smith.

Smith caught 117 passes for over 1800 yards and 23 TDs. If we think Mali will do that, then yeah he's gonna win it. That's highly doubtful, though. So you gotta do something else, like return punts (Desmond Howard) or play defense (Travis Hunter). He's not gonna play defense, so maybe throwing 3-4 TDs, returning a punt or two to the house and catching 100 balls for 12+ TDs can get it done.
