This upcoming team for the Miami Hurricanes basketball program has a chance to be highest preseason ranked team in school history.
College basketball analyst Jon Rothstein believes that the Hurricanes are a top-10 team after Malik Reneau was granted a preliminary injunction against the NCAA to pursue a fifth-year of eligibility.
Last night, the Miami Hurricanes basketball social media team released a teaser video of Reneau walking into the practice facility. Rothstein quoted the post and said: "Malik Reneau + Shelton Henderson + Acaden Lewis = the nucleus of a team that could finish in the Top 3 of the ACC in 2026-27. Miami --- as of today --- is Top-10 good."
The Hurricanes have only been ranked inside the top-15 preseason polls twice in school history: 2017-18 and 2023-24. However, this year's team has a chance to add to that history, boasting endless amounts of depth and length to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
Even without Reneau, he still has the Hurricanes sitting comfortably inside the top-25, slotting them at No. 18 in the country just behind (17) St. Johns and (16) BYU.
Jai Lucas had an incredible first season at Miami, leading the team to a remarkable 26-9 overall record and 13-5 in ACC play. Lucas got Miami back into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Final Four run. The Hurricanes defeated 10-seeded Missouri Tigers, before coming up short against the Purdue Boilermakers in the Round of 32.
Lucas reloaded the Hurricanes' roster after losing key contributors Tre Donaldson, Tru Washington, and Ernest Udeh Jr. He added one of the best and most efficient point guards in the country in Acaden Lewis. He also brought in Georgia forward transfer Somto Cyril, who is expected to be one of the best defenders in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He retained returning production by keeping Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen, while incoming five-star freshman Caleb Gaskins comes in with high expectations. Robert Morris forward transfer DeSean Goode rounds out the front court as the team also added Indiana transfer Nick Dorn and St. Peter's transfer Brent Bland to finish out the backcourt.
