Jai Lucas Says He Wanted a Timeout After the Bucket, But Couldn’t Find a Ref
The Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Cavaliers went back-and-forth all afternoon in a tight battle that came down to the final possessions.
Things didn’t quite go as Miami planned on the last sequence.
The Cavaliers pulled it out late at the free-throw line after Tre Donaldson fouled Virginia’s point guard Chance Mallory with the game in his hands.
Before that, the Hurricanes scored on a tough up-and-under finish from Malik Reneau. After the basket, coach Jai Lucas said in his postgame press conference with the media that he was trying to call a timeout, but couldn’t locate a referee in time.
Point guard Chance Mallory pushed the ball up the floor in the closing seconds. The play resulted in Mallory getting fouled by Donaldson on a three-point attempt.
With the game tied at 83-83, Mallory knocked down all three free throws to put Virginia up 86-83.
The Hurricanes never got another shot off as Virginia finished the game at the line.
It was a tough loss, but not one that should kill Miami’s résumé. The Hurricanes are still likely in good shape for the tournament and will have chances down the stretch to keep fighting for the ACC championship.
