Jai Lucas on Miami's Freshman Shelton Henderson: 'The development is a big piece of it'
Shelton Henderson has quickly emerged as a fan favorite on this Miami roster showing just how versatile and talented he really is. Listen to what Jai Lucas had to say about Shelton Henderson is the postgame interview.
Reporter: "Coach, Shelton hit a couple of those turnaround fades in that first half. Seems like it's a newer element to his game, Just how important has it been for the coaching staff to kind of add those counters to his game as teams get more film and learn how to defend him better and just his overall experience?"
Jai Lucas: "The development is a big piece of it. So, those guys and everybody who's here, we want them to continually get better throughout the year, and Shelton has, he's added more to his game. He's expanded a lot, and now put him kind of in that mid post area like you're saying with those turnarounds. He has been shooting it better too, So he's continued to get better which is always a good sign."
What is Shelton Henderson Averaging?
Shelton Henderson is currently averaging 14.2 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 2.2 assists per game while playing around 30 minutes a night for the Hurricanes. But what really jumps out about Henderson to me is his efficiency. He’s shooting 60.7% from the field, which makes him one of the most talented freshmen in the entire country as we head into February.
Where does Shelton Henderson stand on draft boards?
Right now, Shelton Henderson is on NBA radars, but he is not viewed as a first-round pick. If the draft were held today, most early 2026 NBA Draft big boards project him in the second-round range and some have him going undrafted.
How does one more year look?
Imagine Shelton Henderson coming back for another year of college — watch out, ACC. Things could get scary. Henderson has already shown that he’s one of the best and most consistent freshmen in the entire country. With another year, I’d expect his jumper to reach a whole new level. He’s currently shooting 33.3% from behind the arc this season, and we could see that number rise — something opposing teams wouldn’t be happy about. We could also see his physicality continue to improve, leading to more offensive rebounds and more scoring chances for Miami.
