After more than 20 years of pain, tears, and bad calls, Miami Hurricanes fans can finally crack a smile. The Hurricanes are back in the National Championship for the first time since 2002.

It’s been 25 years since Miami last won a national title, but after years of struggling, it finally feels like the Hurricanes are almost there. So far this season, the Hurricanes have taken down six — yes, six — ranked teams. Miami is 6-0 against ranked opponents, beating Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USF, Texas A&M, and Pittsburgh.

This year, as a No. 10 seed in the College Football Playoff, Miami has its eyes set on ending the title drought. But first, they’ll have to get past the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers tomorrow in Miami Gardens.

This marks the ninth time in school history the Hurricanes have reached the national championship. Here’s a look at how the ‘Canes have fared in past title games:

1983 vs. Nebraska — W 31–30

1986 vs. Penn State — L 10–14

1987 vs. Oklahoma — W 20–14

1989 vs. Alabama — W 33–25

1991 vs. Nebraska — W 22–0

1992 vs. Alabama — L 13–34

2001 vs. Nebraska — W 37–14

2002 vs. Ohio State — L 24–31 (2OT)

Overall National Title Record: 5-3

With tomorrow’s game against Indiana, the Hurricanes have a chance to add their sixth national championship to a storied history that has thrilled and heartbreak fans for more than 40 years.

6-2 actually. The 2002 game was a win, regardless of what Terry Porter had to say.

How are we defining national championship game? Because in 1985 #2 Miami lost the Sugar Bowl to #7, but a Miami win and Miami is national champions because Oklahoma (who Miami beat in Norman in the regular season) beat #1 Penn State in the Orange Bowl.

I count the 1995 Orange Bowl Classic game as a Championship game we lost.
Some were speculating that we would have gotten a split National Championship with Penn State if we would have beaten Nebraska.
It was all moot because we lost to the Huskers but I still sometimes wonder "what if".
