One of the top players in the 2027 class, despite reclassing up a year, DE Marcus Fakatou made the cross-country trip to South Florida for Miami’s “Spring Splash” recruiting weekend. A 6-foot-6, 275-pound edge prospect, Fakatou has some of the most impressive tools around — dominating opposing offensive lineman at will across both the high school and camp circuit. The five-star recapped his visit with me for CanesInSight, and had plenty of interesting things to say about the Canes.

On what made him make the trip to Miami:

“It was a cross-country trip. I didn’t think I was going to make it all the way this way because of how busy my schedule is, but with Coach Keiki hitting me up 24/7 and showing how much he loves me and needs me over here, it made me feel a type of way.”

“It’s different when you feel needed than wanted, they definitely emphasized that they needed me over here, so I felt like I needed to be here.”

“They’re trying to start a Cali pipeline, but also the Polynesian pipeline too. It’s crazy how hard they’re trying to get that started over here.”

On Miami as a potential option:

“They’re pretty high up there.”

“Honestly, when I walked in here, I didn’t know much, I didn't think I’d even venture out this way, but after coming out here, I can see myself playing for a coach like Coach Taylor and Coach Lewis.”

On what stood out at practice and Miami’s d-line track record:

Win, lose, or draw, the D-line always has relentless effort to the ball going full speed, that was something I picked up from practice for sure.

“I don’t know names, but number five, 18, and 12.” (Justin Scott, Armondo Blount, Marquise Lightfoot)

“I think that speaks volumes, having two high-caliber D-ends make it that far — Ruben Bain and Akheem Mesidor — that’s incredible to see and to see that I could also be following their footsteps and pick up where they left off over here.”

On the top schools in his recruiting process and where Miami stacks up:

“Some of the schools I feel best about are definitely Miami — they did their thing today — Oregon for sure, and Ohio State. Those are the three.”

“[USC] did incredible, they always do incredible hosting me and my family, but I just can’t see myself staying home personally. I’m originally from Alaska, so when people tell me to be a hometown hero, I’m not from California. I can’t see myself staying home.”

“I see myself venturing out this way. I think after this we’re going to lock [an OV in], Last week of May for sure.”

On his relationship with the defensive line staff:

“I met Coach Lewis before Coach Taylor, I met him when he came up to my school introducing himself and talking to me. Being able to talk to someone like that, he was drafted in the first round too, being able to know that the coaches I’ll be coached by were in my shoes and did the things I’m doing now.”

On his relationship with coach Cristobal:

“Honestly, when I walked into his office, I was nervous because he seemed like a stubborn, grumpy person. But when we sat down and had the conversation, he seemed genuine and was nice and welcoming. He shows love to not only me but people I bring along.”

On what a potential college will get out of him as a player:

“Whatever school I go to, they’re going to get a leader and someone that plays with relentless effort, and also a humble and down-to-earth guy.
