FINAL: Miami fumbles in 86-83 away loss to Virginia

The University of Miami men’s basketball team battled at No. 14 Virginia but ultimately fell, 86-83, Saturday inside John Paul Jones Arena.

After Virginia (24-3, 12-2 ACC) took an early 11-7, the Hurricanes (21-6, 10-4 ACC) embarked on a 17-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 24-13 advantage. Shelton Henderson spurred the run as the freshman poured in eight points. Dante Allen capped off the run with a 3-pointer.

With the game tied at 39-39 with 40 seconds left, Tru Washington hit his third 3-pointer of the half before Timo Malovec converted on a fastbreak layup to give Miami a 44-39 lead at the half.

The Cavaliers opened the second stanza with an 11-2 run to take a 51-47 advantage before the Hurricanes regained the lead, 59-57, with 11:53 remaining. Virginia countered with another 11-2 run to extend its advantage to seven, forcing Miami to call timeout.

Tre Donaldson opened a 13-2 run by Miami with a 3-pointer that allowed the Hurricanes to retake the lead, 73-70, with five minutes left. Trailing by four, Miami tied the game at 83 before Chance Mallory was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 3.6 second left and hit all three free throws to seal the win.

Donaldson and Henderson led the way with a game-high 18 points apiece as Malik Reneau added 16 and Washington scored 15 off the bench. Ernest Udeh Jr. hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and added eight points while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

The Hurricanes shot 47.5 percent from the floor and made nine of their 18 3-point attempts. At the free throw, Miami hit a season-high 94.1 percent.

Miami remains on the road to take on Florida State on Tuesday at 9 p.m. The game will air on ACC Network and can be heard locally on WQAM.
