The University of Miami men’s basketball team gutted out an 81-77 victory over Wake Forest on Thursday inside the LVJM Coliseum.
The Hurricanes (13-2, 2-0 ACC) took a 39-38 lead into the locker room after a back-and-forth half that saw Miami shoot 55-percent from the floor. Wake Forest (10-6, 1-2) jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first seven minutes but the Hurricanes battled back and led by four, 30-26, behind a pair of Malik Reneau baskets and a 3-pointer.
The Demon Deacons then went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead before the Canes closed out the half on a 6-0 run to lead after the first stanza.
The two teams battled in the second half with neither team leading by more than three points before Wake went on an 8-0 run to take a 70-65 lead with 5:14 remaining. Miami responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a five-point advantage.
With the game tied at 77 with 44.2 seconds, Miami regained the lead as Shelton Henderson grabbed an offensive rebound and tapped the ball back in. Tre Donaldson put Miami up by four with a pair of free throws before Dante Allen sealed the win with a steal on Wake’s final possession.
Donaldson led the Hurricanes with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and was perfect from the charity stripe on all six attempts. Ernest Udeh Jr. registered his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Reneau finished with 18 points as Tru Washington added 13.
For the game, the Hurricanes shot 50-percent from the floor, marking the 10th game this season reaching that mark.
The Hurricanes return to action Saturday as they host Georgia Tech at noon inside the Watsco Center.
