Exclusive Interview: Miami Commit Josh Johnson Believes the Hurricanes’ 2027 Class Can Be Special

When Josh Johnson committed to Miami in late March, a weight came off his shoulders.
After months of calls, texts, and conversations with coaches from around the country, the 2027 three-star defensive lineman finally knew where he wanted to play his college football. Now, his attention is on getting better every day and preparing for his senior season.
Johnson is ranked as the No. 939 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 91 player in Florida. Since announcing his commitment, he’s become one of the leaders of Miami’s recruiting class while building strong relationships with the other commits.
In an exclusive interview with CanesInSight, Johnson talked about life after his commitment, the bond within Miami’s recruiting class, the legacy he wants to leave in Coral Gables, and his message to Hurricanes fans.
A Weight Off His Shoulders
Recruiting can be exciting, but it can also wear on a player. Johnson experienced both sides of it.
Now that his decision is made, he says everything feels much simpler.
“The biggest feeling is definitely relief. The recruiting process was exciting but it was also stressful with coaches from so many schools calling and texting every day. Now that it’s over I can focus on what really matters getting better as a player, finishing my senior season strong and getting ready to be a Hurricane.”
With recruiting behind him, Johnson can spend all of his time focusing on football and making sure he’s ready when it’s time to arrive at Miami.
Building a Brotherhood
Johnson played an active role in recruiting other prospects before making his own commitment public. While most of Miami’s class is now in place, he says the friendships built throughout the process have become just as important.
“Earlier in the process I did my best to help recruit other guys because we were still building the class. Now that we’ve got such a strong group together it’s slowed down a bit since we’re not targeting as many players anymore. I’ve stayed in touch with a lot of the commits though, and we’ve built a really close bond.”
That bond is something Johnson believes will carry over once everyone gets to campus.
Wanting to Be Remembered
Johnson already knows what he wants people to say about him when his Miami career is over.
He isn’t just hoping to have a good career. He wants to leave his name among the program’s great defensive linemen while helping Miami compete for championships.
“I want to be remembered as one of the best defensive linemen to ever play at Miami. I want to help bring championships back, be a great teammate, and leave the program better than I found it through my work ethic and the way I compete every day.”

“I think this class can be one of the greatest in the history of Miami. The talent we have is incredible, but what stands out even more is how close everyone is. If we all keep working, I honestly don’t think there’s a limit to what we can accomplish together.”
For Johnson, the ceiling is as high as the work this class is willing to put in over the next few years.
