Damien Martinez has big Week 2 but where does he Fit In?

Damien Martinez looks like a NFL running-back so far this pre-season but the issue will be where he gets his chance.

THE GOOD

Martinez had 13 touches last night in the Seahawks second pre-season game. The former Hurricane had 11 carries for 50 yards, including his first touchdown, while catching two passes for 14 yards.

In addition to his skills with the ball in hand, Martinez had been praised through training camp for his pass protection. Martinez has shown the ability to be a three down back with his running, catching and blocking attributes.

THE BAD

The Seahawks running back depth. It is hard to imagine they carry four active running-backs on the roster and their room is stacked. Kenneth Walker is the incumbent starter while Zack Charbonnet and George Holani are guarantees to get carries.

THE OUTLOOK

Martinez will be a NFL running back, barring injury he will have multi year career and more than likely get a second contract, where that will be is the question. Martinez could be a trade piece this season for a team who suffers injury and needs an impact player.

If not traded I look for Martinez to begin on the practice squad and be a call up on game days when one of the three ahead of him are injured as that is bound to happen in the 17 week season (Walker is currently battling a foot injury now).

Don’t they have to trade him now or put him on the practice squad where he can be picked up? I don’t know the specific rules, but I was under the impression they couldn’t back pocket him.

0 protection for practice squad players

Teams can protect 4 PS players per week from being signed by other teams pretty sure.

4 out of the 16 by Tuesday. Like you said a weekly thing not season.

He’s in a battle for that practice squad spot with a UDFA Wright who’s flashed in both games. Will be interesting to see how it plays out as it’s rare for teams to use 2 of those spots for P Squad guys.

It's very likely that the Seahawks keep 4 backs. Kenneth Walker is injury prone and they've placed a huge emphasis on running the ball this year.

He just got the DV charges dismissed right? Should be signing/joining them in camp soon
Yes, but he also wanted a fully guaranteed contract, so that is the other hold up.

Not much left to negotiate in that regard given the rest of the 2nd rounders all signed. Judkins was pick 4 in the 2nd round. The top 8 2nd rounder ALL signed fully guaranteed contracts already except for him, including the guy the Browns picked 3 picks earlier. I'd be very surprised if he didn't sign a fully guaranteed contract if he is fully in the clear from all that off-field stuff.
