Class Impact: Renato Brown exits

Class Impact: Renato Brown exits

Stefan Adams
2019 Palm Beach Central (FL) OL/DL Renato Brown departed from the class and decommitted from Miami on Monday night.

The 6-5, 310-pounder is a 3-star ranked #546 overall nationally, the #51 OT, and #75 in the Sunshine State in the 247Sports Composite. His decommitment moves Miami’s 2019 class down to #11 overall in 247Sports’ team rankings, while moving UM down to #9 overall on Rivals.

The Background

While ranked by services as an OT, Brown plays both ways for Palm Beach Central and was committed to Miami as a defensive tackle. Brown had been on UM’s commit list since September 2017, but as we reported a month or so back, the relationship between the parties has been deteriorating for quite some time. Miami was not at all impressed with his junior film and new D-Line coach Jess Simpson had not been in contact with Brown since he was hired. UM began to see him more as an O-Lineman, while Brown was set on playing DT. Also, Brown was the only commit to not visit campus this spring for one of Miami’s multiple recruiting events. Unfortunately, reports just yesterday of Brown being “solid” to Miami and being in frequent contact with the staff were untrue and a case of a kid telling the media what he thinks they want to hear.

Future of the Class

Brown's decommitment brings the total class numbers down to 11 and leaves the Canes with just Doral Academy (FL) 3-star Denzel Daxon at DT in Surge19. At 6’1” 315, Daxon is a perfect fit at nose to plug the middle, while also still being adept at bull-rushing into the backfield. The Canes just signed 2 DT’s in a 2018 class where they could have easily taken 4, so DT has become a huge need in 2019. With two of Miami’s DT’s also set to graduate in 2018, taking three DT’s this cycle is almost necessary, with four not out of the question.

So, who will complement Daxon at 3-tech? Honestly there are a lot of guys that are legitimate options and the Canes are involved with a ton of interior talent right now. At the top of the board would be St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) 4-star Braylen Ingraham, who is a bit of a swingman as a jumbo end/defensive tackle hybrid that will likely take the RJ McIntosh and Patrick Bethel route and grow into a defensive tackle at the next level. Manny Diaz and Jess Simpson love his potential as an interior guy and the staff is feeling good about their chances to eventually land Ingraham, who has named Miami his public leader multiple times. Alabama is also making a push here.

Elsewhere, Largo (FL) 4-star Jaquaze Sorrells and Wekiva (FL) 4-star Tyler Davis have been high priorities for UM for awhile. The Canes are in a good spot for both, but still have plenty of work to do to land their commitments. Dunbar (FL) 4-star Derick Hunter is a former commit and another Miami has been involved with for some time, but his recruitment has been a roller coaster so far; it’s tough to gauge just how much real interest is there.

Further down the board, two prospects at DT put the Canes in their top 10 just last night in Lehigh Senior (FL) 4-star Quashon Fuller and Indian River (VA) 4-star Ben Smiley. Curiously enough, Fuller still remains an FSU commit while having a top 10, although this could be the beginning of the end there as it’s known the new Seminoles’ staff isn’t as high on Fuller as the past coaches. He’s also visited Miami multiple times this spring. Things are still developing with Smiley right now and he’s planning a summer visit.

Recent offers have gone out to Georgia products 4-star Jaelin Humphries and 5-star Travon Walker under Jess Simpson’s influence no doubt, but both are longshots at this time. Another Peach State guy we’re hearing Miami has picked up contact with recently is 5-star Chris Hinton, who is not completely sold on his Michigan commitment and whose position coach has a prior relationship with Simpson, as Simpson coached his DL coach in an all-star game back in the day. Hinton is considering visiting for Paradise camp. A pipedream at this point and still in the earliest of stages, but something to keep an eye on if something develops down the road.

It’s clear the Canes are going after the best of the best all over the Southeast at the position, but if they strike out, Miami Northwestern (FL) 3-star Calijah Kancey is a guy that is being evaluated by the staff right now for an offer. Manny Diaz went to visit his practice to watch Kancey play two weeks ago.

As another quick D-Lineman nugget, even though it’s not a 2019 guy, 2020 Columbus (FL) defensive lineman Elijah Roberts has been considered a Miami-lean since he got his offer and is close to making his decision. Keep an eye out for an announcement from him shortly, as soon as this week.

Jamar Holley from Buford Ga still being recruited?

Also I'd personally watch calling local guys a backup, and saying things "If Miami strikes out" with re: Kancey...You know how many of these locals are.

Love the information in the 1st paragraph about Simpson continuing to use his relationships to expand the board. Hopefully he keeps pushing.

2nd paragraph "makes me a little queasy" in my Joe Philbin voice....Love the kids potential and I know the staff was blown away by his Spring performance but staff gotta approach these 20' commits a little differently.

Last I heard, Holley was still being recruited. Just forgot to include him because obviously he's behind a ton of other guys right now.

And in most cases, I'd agree with you about that stuff, but in this specific case, it's so egregious. Miami's recruiting ten other guys at his position with offers and it's not like Kancey hasn't been in touch with Miami and is some complete unknown. He's been evaluated by the staff in person and still doesn't have an offer. I think he knows where he stands as of now.

I know it's early and that by most accounts we are not doing bad at recruiting this cycle, but it definitely doesn't have the same juice the last few cycles had at this time...

Take U commit Michael Tarquin hands down over Brown. Tarquin has the ability to be an excellent left tackle and not a work in progress.

.

I'm not so sure...When the U sent out those draft day edits on twitter he got one. I'm not saying it means he's at top of the board, and I certainly think Ingraham and Sorrels are above him, but "a ton of guys?" I think he's somewhere right in that 2nd group of DT targets, but probably above Kancey and Ray and those types right now.
