Can Miami Shut Down Notre Dame’s High-Powered Run Game?

We’re officially under 90 hours from kickoff, Miami and Notre Dame are both looking to start the season 1-0, but for the Canes to pull it off, they’ve got to do one thing: stop Notre Dame’s run game. The Irish bring in one of the best running back groups in the country, if not the best, and if Miami can’t slow them down, it could be a long night at Hard Rock.

As we all know, the name Jeremiyah Love, if you've been watching college football. As the running back group is led by Love, what makes them scary in the run game is that they have a 1-2 punch with him and Jadarian Price, who is the primary backup running back for Jeremiyah Love at Notre Dame.

Last year, the two backs combined for 1,871 yards, and now they’ll be running behind a solid offensive line heading into Miami.

The Hurricanes are revamped from last season as the D-line is fast, physical, and deep enough to rotate fresh bodies in the game. But this is going to be a different type of test. Notre Dame isn’t flashy about it, they’ll line up, run it right at you, and try to wear you down. If Miami can stand tall, it forces Notre Dame to rely on true freshman quarterback CJ Carr, who’s making his first-ever start. That’s exactly what Miami wants.

As we all know, the crowd is going to be wild, with the orange-out making Hard Rock straight-up insane. Picture CJ Carr trying to call plays when he can’t even hear himself think. If Miami shuts down the run, the game falls right into his hands, and that could get ugly for the Irish.

But if Notre Dame’s backs start rolling? That’s trouble. Long drives keep Carson Beck and Miami’s offense sitting on the sideline, which is the last thing the Hurricanes want.

At the end of the day, this game is going to be won in the trenches. If Miami’s front seven holds strong and takes away the Irish ground game, the Canes are in great shape. If not, Notre Dame just might have a chance to finally break their curse in Miami.

Let's see how Love and Price adjust to all focus being on them versus a QB with 800 yards rushing and 17 TDs.

And that QB running with an extra hat in the run game.

Those 3rd and 3-4 last year were auto Leonard runs, and he converted a lot. But ND was still only 51st in the country in 3rd down percentage. I think it's on Carr's arm to convert those Sunday night.
IMO first team to 24 likely wins.

It's interesting people focus on this. Yes, Riley had a lot of designed runs which took a huge load off Love and Riley wasn't a huge pass threat. I think Denbrock is going to run 20+ personnel and split out Love 10-15 snaps and take a defender with him. Creates a stronger advantage in the run game and if it's a pass, you have a huge mismatch in the slot.

Love is special because he's an elite swiss army knife - he can impact a game so significantly without touching the ball. Let's at least give credit where it's due - kid is a stud. Not many RBs go in the first round anymore, and there's a reason he's projected there. It's also rumored he's going to be on KR too.

More worried about Love in the passing game in space if we play aggressive upfront

Any time Denbrock wants to split Love out wide and not give him the football is a win for Miami. That'd be incredibly moronic. And it's not like Carr is going to run, so I guess if you want to use Love as a decoy and give Price the ball with no lead-blocker or tight end on the field, I would think Heatherman would gladly take that all night.

Love is awesome and if he doesn't touch the ball 20+ times Sunday night, Denbrock shouldn't be allowed on the plane home.

I think they split him out wide, see who follows him, then make a call if it's going to be a run or pass. Love is going to have the advantage on literally anyone covering him in the slot (save maybe Caleb Downs).

Short answer: YES.

You're kidding, right? Love is going to hurt us without touching the ball? I call bull**** on that.

Both Love and Price were low-volume/high-yardage rushers last year based on SEVEN long runs (five for Love, two for Price).

Not scared. If our defense does its job, there will be no long runs from ND on Sunday.

Cory Hetherman has had 8 months to figure this out, I’m very curious to see how we line up from the start.

Yeah, of course. None of these receivers are scary. Make them throw the ball.
WR core is extremely solid but not scary. Like no game breaker but all very good. Feels like ours from last year

We should be able to run with them as long as it’s not Wes chasing
