With uncertainty surrounding Javian Mallory’s commitment to Miami following his visit to Alabama last weekend, the West Boca product headed down to Coral Gables for his official visit with the Hurricanes this weekend. The four-star running back has been committed to the ‘Canes since mid-march, but growing interest from the Crimson Tide has left many wondering if it will stick. In return the Hurricanes have been doing some shopping of their own, hosting both Derrek Cooper and Jae Lamar for official visits. Mallory spoke with me for CanesInSight following his official visit, here’s what he had to say:

Overall feeling after the visit:

“The visit went really well. My main point coming here, his visit was to continue to build the relationship I have with the coaching staff, with some of the players, and to help get some recruits to commit.”

On his relationship with the coaching staff:

“The relationship with them is very good, it is the best relationship I have with a coaching staff and team, as far as the players and everything like that. Being from down here is easier 'cause I know a lot of the players, and me and Coach Merrit have really been calling each other almost each and every day, really just checking, building that relationship.”

On the status of his commitment to Miami with Alabama pushing:

“I'm still committed to Miami, nothing has changed my mind to decommit. I'm 100% committed.”

“I feel confident.”

On where Miami stands out:

“Just the love and care that they show for me and my family.”

“Especially with the stuff we've been through these last 400 days, it will tear somebody down, you know, and just through the love and connection the coaching staff have with me and my family, you know, being able to comfort and help us get through these days means a lot.”

On the push Alabama is making:

“[Alabama’s] still coming at me very hard. You know, they've been reaching out, texting, calling me almost every day, really trying to see how I feel about them. But you know of course when I go, I'm committed, so they're gonna roll out the red carpet. They’ll show it their best, they want to try to impress me and my family the most, but I still love it where I'm at right now.”

Ultimately if Lamar wants in Mallory is odd man out if Cooper also wants in. Gonna be real interesting
I could be totally wrong about this, but in no way do I see a scenario where we drop Mallory. PR would take a nasty hit. He’s already committed, so the ONLY way he doesn’t sign with us, would be because he decides not to. Stranger things have happened, but you can about pencil Mallory in.

I want all 3 but it rarely seems to work out that way. I hope I'm wrong.

If we sign all 3, that would be insane. But you are correct. It never seems to work out that way…. at least for us.
Mario's offense needs quality RB depth ... good for the program and good for the RB's longevity. They have excellent UM careers and are still healthy for the draft.

IF and that’s a massive IF … Lamar wants in as well, then you take all three and figure it out later. But if it’s just two (most likely), then it’s Mallory and Cooper. All day long and Full Stop.

Cooper gives you the advantage of moving him to LB, which is a differentiator in his recruitment. Buy that aside, those two are championship level RB’s and I would feel pretty darn good if they were our two tailbacks for this cycle.
